Screenshots from Rare’s Canceled Everwild Have Reportedly Surfaced

Several screenshots from Rare’s cancelled game, Everwild, have appeared online. These images give the best look so far at how the game’s interface and visuals were developing before the project was stopped, offering a glimpse of what it might have become.

Originally announced in late 2019, the game *Everwild* faced numerous difficulties during its development, including a complete change in creative direction. Microsoft cancelled the project in July 2025 as part of a larger company reorganization. This same restructuring also led to the cancellation of the *Perfect Dark* reboot, another game from Xbox Game Studios that had experienced lengthy development problems.

Leaked Screenshots Reveal Scrapped Everwild UI Tabs and Systems

After Everwild was cancelled several months ago, screenshots from the game have surfaced online, found by the website MP1st. These images, reportedly from a developer who worked on the project, reveal the game’s menus, including the inventory system. The inventory has six sections: Plants, Seeds, Mosaics, Tools, Figments, and Favorites. This is the first time we’re seeing these systems in action – previously, Rare only shared concept art and trailers for Everwild.

The creatures shown in leaked images, called “Figments,” are small and appear to have large, onion-shaped heads – suggesting they are quite tiny. One is labeled a “Light Figment,” hinting they might be categorized by elements. While they could have been collectible companions, the way they stack in the game’s interface suggests they were probably used as materials for crafting. The images also show sections for seeds and plants, implying players would gather and grow things. If previous reports are true that *Everwild* was meant to be a multiplayer game, these materials might have been tradeable between players if the game had been finished.

The recently leaked screenshots likely show a very early version of *Everwild*. If the game had been further along in development – at the alpha stage or beyond – it might not have been affected by the recent changes at Rare, which led to several experienced employees leaving. However, it’s unclear how old these screenshots are, so they could even be from a version of the game that existed *before* the 2021 reboot.

While this recent leak doesn’t change the fact that *Everwild* has been cancelled, it does give us a look at some of the concepts Rare was developing for the game as early as 2014. It’s likely that some of the designs and gameplay elements created for *Everwild* will be used in Rare’s future projects – something developers often do. Now that Rare has celebrated its 40th anniversary and faced some layoffs, everyone is wondering what the studio will work on next, and if they’ll announce a new game that isn’t related to *Sea of Thieves* anytime soon.
