As a dedicated fan, I’ve been thrilled to see that since its launch in 2018, the enchanting world of Sea of Thieves has played host to numerous crossovers! These collaborations have not only added a delightful assortment of cosmetics to the game, but they’ve also introduced new ship customization options and outfits inspired by beloved series like Halo, Ori, and Banjo-Kazooie.

Moreover, some crossovers have evolved into fully-realized expansions, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island collaborations. These expansions have enriched the gameplay experience by introducing new explorable areas, voiced characters, and dedicated questlines. It’s been an exciting journey sailing these familiar waters!

It has been some time since “Sea of Thieves” featured a collaboration, the last one being the “Borderlands” tie-in from August 2021. However, this long wait has now ended! Approximately a week ago, “Sea of Thieves” teamed up with Bungie’s “Destiny 2,” and this cross-over could pave the way for a fresh kind of collaboration.

Sea of Thieves’ Destiny Collaboration Explained

Based on information from Kelly Lombardi, Rare’s Product Marketer (as shared in an Xbox Wire blog post), the developers of Sea of Thieves have been collaborating with Bungie since 2023. The cosmetic items launched on March 27, 2025 are a result of this collaboration, which is evident from the “Lightbearer” branding. In essence, the Destiny-themed cosmetic sets for Sea of Thieves include a special ship bundle, a ship crest, a costume set, and a weapon bundle.

Of course, each of these items draws inspiration from the character models and world design within Destiny 2’s gameplay. The Lightbearer costume set is modeled after the robes worn by Destiny 2’s Guardians, while the ship figureheads named “Silent, Mighty, and Wise” pay homage to the Hunter, Titan, and Warlock classes respectively. These crossover items can be purchased from the in-game Pirate Emporium store within Sea of Thieves.

Sea of Thieves Might Have Opened the PlayStation Floodgates

The fact that Destiny 2 is teaming up with Sea of Thieves for the first time since August 2021 might not be a mere coincidence. Nearly a year ago, Sea of Thieves made its debut on PlayStation 5, which was one of the initial Xbox exclusive titles to set sail beyond its native waters. Given that the transition to PlayStation likely facilitated this latest collaboration between Sea of Thieves and Destiny 2, it seems plausible that the developer behind Destiny 2 is now part of Sony’s first-party studio family. With one first-party PlayStation game partnering with Sea of Thieves, it’s only a matter of time before other games in the same family follow suit.

As a gamer, I can’t help but imagine how perfectly the mythological world of God of War could blend with the pirate-filled seas of Sea of Thieves. The intricate carvings of their main characters would make for striking ship decorations, and the iconic red omega logo from God of War would add a touch of epicness to any sail. It’s like these two worlds were tailor-made for each other!

Imagining creatively, many of PlayStation’s initial series could fit seamlessly within the realm of Sea of Thieves. For instance, Ghost of Tsushima’s Sakai Mask might serve as a fresh outfit option, Shadow of the Colossus’ Sword of Dormin could become a new melee weapon, and Uncharted could lead to an entirely novel treasure hunt questline. Cross-platform collaborations like these could revitalize this 7-year-old game, while simultaneously fortifying the emerging relationship between Xbox and PlayStation.
