Summary
- Secret Level creators pitched a Halo and Doom crossover episode but got turned down by Microsoft and id Software.
- The team wanted to adapt Half-Life as well but faced obstacles.
- Despite setbacks, the success of season one has opened doors for potential new adaptations in Season 2.
As a dedicated gamer and follower of the Secret Level series since its inception, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that we missed out on a Halo-Doom crossover episode. The creators’ ambition to bring these iconic franchises together was nothing short of exhilarating, and I can only imagine the epic battle scenes Master Chief and Doom Slayer would have waged against each other.
However, as a seasoned observer of the gaming industry, I am well aware that studios often face numerous obstacles when it comes to adaptation rights and deals. The fact that Microsoft and id Software turned down the idea doesn’t diminish my admiration for Tim Miller and Dave Wilson’s audacity in pitching such an innovative concept.
I am hopeful, though, that Amazon has taken note of the success of Secret Level’s first season and will grant the team the freedom to explore new territories in Season 2. Perhaps we’ll finally see a Halo-Doom crossover, or even a Half-Life episode, if they can manage to navigate the labyrinth of legal complexities that surround these beloved franchises.
In the end, I can’t help but joke about it: I guess we’ll just have to wait for the next season to see whether Master Chief and Doom Slayer will finally cross paths… or if they’ll end up in a lawyers’ battle instead!
Fans of the “Secret Level” show were almost gifted with a crossover between “Halo” and “Doom”. The video game-inspired anthology series, broadcast on Prime Video, brought popular titles such as “Mega Man” and “Warhammer 40K” to television screens. Many fans wished for more franchises to receive the same treatment in future seasons. Interestingly, the creators of “Secret Level”, Tim Miller and Dave Wilson, had also desired to adapt other games, even proposing a potential episode combining “Halo” and “Doom”.
The creators of the animated series weren’t shy about pushing boundaries with their original content. For instance, they transformed Pac-Man into a horror theme in “Secret Level,” but not every concept from Miller and Wilson was approved for the final product. Regrettably, a blend of Doom and Halo concepts never progressed past the initial proposal, despite their widespread popularity.
In a conversation with Collider, Miller and Wilson shared their aspiration to create a joint episode starring Master Chief from Halo and Doom Slayer, but this idea was not approved. Miller voiced his annoyance at comments questioning why Secret Level didn’t include Halo when it did feature Spelunky, explaining that they had discussions with Microsoft about the project but couldn’t make it happen. Wilson further mentioned that an intense letter was written to both Microsoft and id Software, but the studios ultimately declined the proposal. Although Secret Level remains one of the top game adaptations in 2024, some fans may be disheartened to learn that it could have been even more impressive had the collaboration between these beloved franchises come to fruition.
Secret Level Season 2 Could Feature New Games Not in Season 1
Miller and Wilson had aspirations beyond adapting just “Halo” and “Doom,” but those plans never materialized. In addition, Miller expressed interest in creating a “Half-Life” episode, an idea that also fell through. The creators mentioned that several games have prior adaptation agreements which can prevent “Secret Level” from acquiring the rights, and other studios may simply decline. However, rejection for the first season doesn’t automatically mean that future opportunities won’t arise. Amazon has officially announced that “Secret Level” will return for a second season, potentially covering games that didn’t make it into the first season.
Miller expressed optimism that the initial season’s success might pave the way for adapting other intellectual properties (IP) during Season 2, but it remains uncertain if popular franchises like Halo or Doom will be part of this crossover. Miller hinted at potential legal hurdles and ongoing negotiations as possible obstacles. However, what truly concerns them are the fans. The creators of Secret Level are more afraid of the fans than anything else. This fear might motivate them to challenge larger studios in order to realize their dreams and cater to fan expectations in future seasons.
