As a die-hard fan of Five Nights at Freddy’s since its inception, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia with the announcement of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. Having navigated through countless theories, debates, and speculations surrounding the series’ lore over the years, it’s finally time to unravel the mysteries that have kept us on our toes for a decade.
The popular game Five Nights at Freddy’s is gearing up to uncover the roots of the Mimic, as developer Steel Wool unveiled their upcoming mainline title, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Mystery of the Mimic. This revelation took place on day six of the 8-day FNAF 10th Anniversary Celebration, which ran from August 1 to August 8, 2024. Fans had anticipated Steel Wool would announce a DLC for December 2023’s Help Wanted 2, but instead, the studio surprised fans with an entirely new game. The upcoming FNAF title promises to present the earliest events in the series’ timeline and its announcement trailer hinted at some of the franchise’s most intriguing lore. If these hints align within the storyline, Mystery of the Mimic looks set to assemble the most significant forces in FNAF.
In the latest installments of “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” namely “RUIN” and “Help Wanted 2,” novel elements have been added to the game’s backstory. The most striking addition is the emergence of the Mimic, a chilling animatronic character, as the apparent main antagonist in the current game timeline of “FNAF.” The Mimic was first hinted at in the third book of the “Tales of the Pizzaplex” series, “Nexie,” and its early activities were elaborated upon through a series of epilogues that concluded each book in the series. The Mimic seems to introduce one of the oldest known elements in the game’s narrative, as its creation is believed to have taken place in the 1970s. Interestingly, when “Help Wanted 2” was launched five months later, it introduced another intriguing piece of information: an in-game reference to the enigmatic Fall Fest of 1970, an event that predates everything else in the convoluted timeline of “FNAF.”
Secret of the Mimic’s Teaser Referenced Some of FNAF’s Biggest Mysteries
The brief teaser trailer for “Secret of the Mimic” is compact yet powerfully impactful. As a movie projector whirs into view, the camera advances towards a cryptic wind-up device. Abruptly, its limb begins to sway, and an eerie rendition of My Grandfather’s Clock, a tune previously played by the Puppet’s music box in “FNAF 2,” echoes through the scene. The melody ceases, but no figure emerges. Instead, the device’s lid gradually opens to disclose the upper visage of what seems like an animatronic jester, which emits a chilling cackle before the projector film smokes and concludes.
The new animatronic character in “Secret of the Mimic” sheds light on a significant theme that fans have eagerly anticipated for quite some time, as its clown-like appearance ties in with the recurring motif of carnivals, circuses, and festivals throughout the series. This theme has been present since the build-up to “FNAF: Security Breach,” where “Fazbear Frights” introduced Circus Baby as a potential future antagonist, and “Fury’s Rage” hinted at her Eleanor iteration. In “Help Wanted,” we saw unsettling carnival and clown drawings from “Pizzeria Sim,” and in “Help Wanted 2,” Fall Fest 1970, a collection of carnival-themed minigames, new animatronics like Mystic Hippo and Carnie, and more were introduced. With the introduction of another clown animatronic, the Puppet’s theme, and the Mimic being connected in its reveal trailer, “Secret of the Mimic” seems poised to offer explanations for long-standing questions regarding the series’ earliest events and provide context for many other aspects.
Secret of the Mimic May Reveal the Origins of FNAF’s Major Forces
Title “The Secret of the Mimic” finally materializes as the tale Steel Wool has been eager to share, one occurring prior to the earliest recorded events in the FNAF series as hinted by the “Help Wanted 2” Fall Fest 1970 poster. Initially, fans might have assumed the game would focus on that event. However, through a quick-as-a-wink frame in the trailer’s film reel, it is now apparent that “Secret of the Mimic” seems to take place in 1979. Despite being nine years before the first known Fall Fest, the narrative would still represent the earliest events ever depicted.
Based on the trailer and its setting, it seems that Secret of the Mimic may delve deeper than just revealing the Mimic’s canonical origins. Hints towards clown-like animatronics and the Puppet suggest that key elements from the series could make an appearance. The Mimic, associated with negative forces in the lore, and the Puppet, tied to positive ones, could play significant roles. If this happens, the story could provide a foundation for the entire series, offering explanations for characters, events, and lore points that have puzzled fans for almost a decade. The exact storyline of Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is yet to be revealed, but fan excitement ahead of its 2025 release has reached an all-time high.
