As a movie lover who’s also fond of virtual farming, I must say that Stardew Valley is an absolute gem! Among the various creatures you can nurture within this digital world, chickens are often the first choice for many gamers, primarily because they require the least expensive coop to set up.
In Stardew Valley, hens yield both regular and large eggs. The size and quality of these eggs are influenced by each chicken’s happiness level. This happiness is determined by factors such as feeding, keeping them warm, and interaction with the player. However, figuring out how to feed the chickens might be a puzzle for novice players in this game.
How to Get Chickens in Stardew Valley
What Do Chickens Eat?
To bring chickens onto your farm, you first need to construct a suitable dwelling for them – a chicken coop. You can obtain the necessary materials and services at the Carpenter’s Store, which lies in the mountains north of Pelican Town. Once there, you can arrange for a coop to be built on your land. Building a coop will require certain materials and an initial investment, as detailed below:
- 4000g
- x300 Wood
- x100 Stone
As a fervent cinema enthusiast, if I were running a poultry farm, I’d find myself in need of an upgrade from my humble chicken coop, capable of housing just four feathered friends. If I were to expand my barnyard family to include ducks and other creatures, I’d have to invest in a larger abode – a Sprawling Coop. From the Sprawling Coop, my dreams would lead me to the Premium Coop, capable of accommodating a bountiful 12 animals.
On Tuesdays, except for when it’s raining or there’s an in-game event, you can’t access the Carpenter’s Shop.
To access a coop or any animal shelter on your farm, find the compact, vertical door located on the building’s front side. Assuming it isn’t raining or wintertime, during the day, animals will exit to eat and explore your farm. At exactly 6:00 PM, all animals return to their individual buildings, allowing you to close the doors. Remember, never leave any of your animals outside overnight as they could potentially fall prey to wild animals.
To make sure your barnyard creatures in Stardew Valley provide you with eggs and other goods, it is essential to feed them. These farm animals prefer to eat grass or hay. Here’s a simple guide on maintaining an adequate supply of both:
1. Grass: Plant clover, wheatgrass, or wildflowers around your farm to naturally grow grass for your animals. You can also purchase seeds from the traveling cart or buy them from the community center.
2. Hay: Harvest hay by mowing grass on your farm during the summer season. You’ll need a scythe or lawnmower to do this. Once harvested, the hay will be stored in the barn for later use. Alternatively, you can purchase hay from the traveling cart or the community center if needed.
Grass
Instead of calling them “the long green stalks growing around your farm,” you could also refer to them as “the tall, verdant grasses found on your property“. It’s essential to distinguish these from the small weeds that scatter seeds, as they are what your animals consume. As long as there’s grass within the vicinity of their coop/barn, your livestock will feed.
If you find yourself low on grass, consider purchasing the “Grass Starter Recipe” from Pierre for 1000g as an alternative. Alternatively, you can get a ‘Grass Starter’ for 100g, but it might be more beneficial to start with the recipe. Your character will plant one ‘Grass Starter’ on one ‘Tile’.
To create the “Grass Starter”, you’ll require ten pieces of Fiber. This material can be obtained by chopping down weeds.
Throughout the year, the wild grass on your farm remains untrimmed. Yet, remember that your livestock won’t venture outdoors during the cold winter months. Therefore, consider either mowing the grass or allowing it to grow until the arrival of spring.
Hay
Another choice for chicken feed is hay, which can be obtained in two ways: buying it individually from Marnie at 50g each piece, or harvesting it yourself using a scythe from the tall grass. However, before you start cutting the grass, it’s important to have a Silo, which you can purchase from Robin for 100g, 100 Stone, 10 Clay, and 5 Copper Bars. If you don’t have a Silo, harvesting grass won’t yield any hay for your chickens.
Retrieve the Iridium Scythe from the Farming Mastery within the Mastery Cave located in Cindersap Forest. This is an excellent instrument for harvesting hay.
How to Get Blue Grass
Meadowlands Farm, Blue Grass Crafting Recipe

6 introduced a fresh layout for Stardew Valley farms, called the Meadowlands Farm. Unlike the standard 15 Parsnip Seeds given by Lewis, this farm begins with a Coop and two chickens right away. A unique type of grass, Blue Grass, grows on the Meadowlands Farm. Unlike regular Starter Grass, consuming Blue Grass doubles an animal’s friendship points. Initially, it’s best to leave the Blue Grass untouched when you first start out.
On Ginger Island, you can acquire the Blue Grass Starter recipe from within Qi’s Walnut Room. This requires a total of 40 Qi Gems. In order to create Blue Grass, here are the essential ingredients needed:
To get the Blue Grass Starter recipe on Ginger Island, visit Qi’s Walnut Room and collect 40 Qi Gems. Use these gems along with the following ingredients to craft your Blue Grass:
This version maintains the same information but aims to make it more accessible for readers who may not be familiar with certain terms or gaming jargon.
- x25 Fiber
- x10 Moss
- x1 Mystic Syrup
How to Feed Chickens Hay In Stardew Valley
How to Get a Silo

To give hay to the chickens, put the hay in the feeding trough that’s situated at the back of the chicken coop. If you want to use hay from your Stardew Valley farm’s silos for them, you can find it in the box at the top left corner of the coop. Any excess hay can be returned to the silo using this same box.
On chilly winter days or rainy ones, remember to stock hay in your animal feeders. Upon upgrading to the Deluxe Barn/Coop, you’ll find it equipped with a self-replenishing Auto-Feeder. As long as there is hay stored in the silo, the Auto-Feeder takes care of refilling itself daily.
How Much Do Eggs Sell For?
All Coop Animals that Lay Eggs in Stardew Valley

In the initial phases of Stardew Valley, chickens can prove to be quite valuable. Feeding them is essential for enhancing the quality of their eggs, and if you have a large coop or an upgraded one, you might even start raising other egg-laying animals like ducks.
You may acquire Blue Chickens by achieving Shane’s 8-heart event. When you decide to buy a chicken from Marnie, there’s approximately a 25% chance it could be a blue chicken (ensure to glance at the top of your screen before completing the transaction). Contrary to their color, blue chickens lay standard, white chicken eggs.
Here’s a look at how much eggs sell for depending on quality:

Dinosaur Eggs are categorized as artifacts instead of items produced by animals. These eggs can occasionally be found dropped by Pepper Rex creatures in the Skull Cavern. To maximize profits from selling Dinosaur Eggs, it’s recommended to consult the Treasure Evaluation Manual.
Golden Chickens
If you manage to attain perfection, you will be rewarded with a Golden Chicken, which in turn, gives you the opportunity to collect Golden Eggs. Once you verify that you have achieved perfection (you can do this in Qi’s Walnut Room), you can obtain your first Golden Egg through any of these means:
- Buy from for 100000g.
- Buy from Qi’s Walnut Room for 100 Qi Gems.
- A random event in which a Golden Witch will fly over your Coop after your character goes to sleep.
- Loot from treasure chests via fishing (0.12% chance).
Incubate the Golden Egg to get a Golden Chicken, which will then produce more Golden Eggs.

What Are Eggs Used For?
Eggs vs. Mayonnaise
In Stardew Valley, you can present eggs as thoughtful gifts to other characters. The reaction of the recipient depends on the kind of egg: some may just like it (Liked), some may love it (Loved), while others might not appreciate it at all (Hated). For instance, Void Eggs are only liked by Krobus and Sebastian. Moreover, you’ll require chicken eggs to prepare dishes like the Pink Cake or Complete Breakfast.
Before you can make more money, either by transforming them or using the Treasure Appraisal Guide (Dinosaur Eggs), you haven’t yet found the golden chicken, you need to first turn these items into mayonnaise. You can achieve this using a Mayonnaise Machine, a tool that you will learn to craft at Farming Level 2.
- Eggs, Large Eggs, Ostrich Eggs, and Golden Eggs all make regular Mayonnaise. The price depends on the quality of mayonnaise. If you use an Ostrich Egg to make mayonnaise, you’ll get x10 Mayonnaise from one egg.
- Duck Mayonnaise is made from Duck Eggs and sells for 375g.
- Void Mayonnaise sells for 275g, which is lower than a gold-star regular Mayonnaise. You’ll want to hold onto x1 Void Mayonnaise for an event that unlocks after completing the Community Center or Joja Membership.
- Dinosaur Mayonnaise sells for 800g, but you’ll need one for the Movie Theater Junimo box if you took the Community Center route.
