As a longtime fan of Sega and its iconic franchises, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear about the return of the legendary Virtua Fighter series! Growing up, I remember spending countless hours honing my skills on the original arcade game, and it holds a special place in my heart. The fact that Sega is bringing back this classic fighting game after so many years is truly exciting news.

Sega is currently developing a fresh installment of the popular fighting series, Virtua Fighter, marking its continuation nearly two decades after the re-release of its last major title. Following a significant announcement made last December about reviving several classic game franchises, Sega has now decided to include Virtua Fighter in the lineup of SEGA Intellectual Properties (IPs) set to receive new releases soon.

The Virtua Fighter series traces its roots to the original arcade game launched in 1993, which found its way onto Sega Saturn in 1994 and 32X in 1995. This groundbreaking 3D fighter, one of Sega’s most successful arcade games ever, was praised for being ahead of its time with its gameplay and presentation. Since then, there have been four main-series sequels, the last of which came out for arcades in 2006 and on PlayStation 3 in 2007. The franchise comprises a total of 24 games, including special editions and mobile versions; the latest game, an exclusive arcade release, was launched in 2023.

During The Game Awards 2023, Sega announced plans to revive some of its iconic game series, including Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and now Virtua Fighter is set to join this lineup. In an interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Sega’s global head of transmedia, Justin Scarpone, confirmed that Virtua Fighter is among several classic game franchises being developed for new games by the company. He stated during the interview: “We have a collection of titles currently in development that belong to our legacy category, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and another Virtua Fighter is being developed as well.

Sega Adds Virtua Fighter to its Revived Franchises List

As a dedicated follower of the Virtua Fighter series, I can’t hide my excitement at the hints dropped by Sega earlier this October. Their cryptic tweet featuring an old Virtua Fighter game and the mysterious abbreviation “SE6A” had many of us speculating about a potential new installment – Virtua Fighter 6! However, despite the tantalizing clues from Scarpone, we’re still waiting for an official announcement regarding whether this rumored project will be part of the main series or take on a different form.

It’s not a new thing for Sega to discuss the potential return of Virtua Fighter. Although there wasn’t any hint at The Game Awards 2023, some fans were anticipating a Virtua Fighter teaser due to Sega’s pre-show marketing using the same font as the Virtua Fighter games. Moreover, the CEO of Sega of America, Shuji Utsumi, has mentioned that the franchise is long overdue for a comeback.
