  • Metaphor: ReFantazio benefited from SEGA’s publishing power and achieved a strong global launch.
  • Metaphor: ReFantazio had a bigger impact than Sonic X Shadow Generations, and is now even nominated for Game of the Year.

As a long-time fan who’s witnessed the evolution of gaming, I can confidently say that SEGA’s acquisition of Atlus in 2013 has been a game-changer, to say the least! The success story of Metaphor: ReFantazio is a testament to this fact.

Way back in 2013, I was thrilled when SEGA secured the acquisition of Index Corporation, Atlus’ parent company, for approximately ¥14 billion (equivalent to around $90 million today). This deal made SEGA the proud owner of iconic franchises such as Persona, Tactics Ogre, and many others.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement over SEGA’s elation with Atlus. To put it simply, SEGA has not just been satisfied, but they’ve gone so far as to call the acquisition of Atlus, the developer behind Persona, one of their most fruitful mergers and acquisitions to date!

SEGA acknowledges the success of Metaphor: ReFantazio (as reported by Automaton-Media’s translation) and credits its broader global reach for contributing to its success. Previously, Atlus had limited resources and primarily focused sales in specific countries or regions on certain platforms. However, by merging with Sega, Atlus has been able to expand their targets. SEGA attributes the strong debut of Metaphor: ReFantazio to both the quality of the product and the publishing might of Sega, which enabled a simultaneous global launch across multiple platforms.

Regarding the Sonic X Shadow Generations game series, Sega mentions that it’s currently holding its own against projected sales figures. Moreover, they anticipate increased sales as a result of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film, slated to hit screens next month.

In terms of success, Sonic X Shadow Generations is doing well, both financially and in terms of reviews. However, when it comes to making a significant impact on Sega, Metaphor: ReFantazio clearly takes the lead. Although Sonic’s latest game has a “Strong” rating on Open Critic with 87% of critics recommending it, Metaphor boasts a “Mighty” rating and an astounding 98% of critics who endorse playing the RPG. That’s quite a remarkable difference!

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Metaphor: ReFantazio was also selected as a contender for “Game of the Year” at The Game Awards. This recognition must have brought a smile to Sega’s face.

Fans of Atlus can anticipate something exciting, since director Katsura Hashino from Metaphor has announced he’s already begun working on a new project.
