It seems that Sega is showing a lot of excitement about reviving some of its classic games and series, and hints they’ve dropped suggest that a remake of a beloved Sega game could be on the horizon. Over time, there have been signs pointing towards this long-awaited remake, with another teaser being released right before June. Historically, Sega has unveiled new games during their broadcasts in June, so fans might not have to wait much longer for an announcement.
Despite eager fans anticipating news about a remake of this particular title, it appears that time might have run out; community members’ persistent efforts to revive this game may have made any further attempts by the company ineffective. However, 2025 could offer new hope for Sega, and if these rumors are indeed accurate, there may be a chance for the company to rejuvenate its position with this project.
A Sonic Unleashed Remake Could Be on the Way
June’s Sonic PICT References Sonic Unleashed
On a regular basis, the official Sonic Channel website shares unique character art from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. One such series is the Sonic PICT artwork, created by Yui Karasuno, which has recently been incorporated into the site’s calendar. The Sonic PICT illustrations often provide fans with a glimpse into the characters’ lives beyond gameplay, although they occasionally relate to game launches, like the November 2022 piece depicting Sonic and Koco on Sonic Frontiers’ Kronos Island, aligning with the release of that game.
In the June 2025 issue of Sonic’s Pictorial, the illustration depicts Sonic doing laundry during a stormy day, with a travel magazine open nearby showcasing Adabat – the location for the Jungle Joyride stage from Sonic Unleashed. Since past Sonic Pict issues have hinted at upcoming games such as Sonic Frontiers, it’s conceivable that this mention of Sonic Unleashed could be more than just an homage or Easter egg.
As a passionate fan, I often look forward to Sonic Central events held annually in June, marking the anniversary of the beloved Sonic series. The link between the Sonic PICT June 2025 calendar artwork and Sonic Central might hint at some connection. Known for its Sonic-centric announcements spanning game reveals, movie news, and more, this year’s broadcast could potentially unveil a remake of Sonic Unleashed if the presence of Adabat in the Sonic PICT is significant.
Sega May Have Been Hinting at a Remake for a While
On the popular web series TailsTube, there have been numerous mentions of a character named Professor Victoria, or Torii as she’s also known. This character has popped up in Sonic X Shadow Generations and was showcased in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie billboard. In episode 11 of TailsTube, it becomes clear that Torii is a professor at Spagonia University, a place first introduced in Sonic Unleashed, fueling speculation about a possible remake being planned.
Following the debut of Sonic Unleashed, an accompanying animated short named Sonic: Night of the Werehog was unveiled. This story features Sonic and Chip exploring a haunted house inhabited by three ghosts – Su, Uh, and Lah. Fifteen years later, these characters from Sonic Unleashed resurfaced in a sequel short titled Ghost Tale, bringing back the cherished trio. It’s also worth mentioning that Su and Uh made appearances in side missions of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Sonic Unleashed, particularly in Adabat and Spagonia. This could suggest a link between the Sonic PICT art, Torii, and a potential remake of Sonic Unleashed.
In addition to Sonic Unleashed, one of its levels will appear in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds too. Apotos is joining as a track and Holoska becomes an option for the Travel Rings, which are responsible for changing the game’s tracks dynamically. While Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds incorporates elements from various series installments like Sonic Riders and Sonic and the Secret Rings, having two stages from Sonic Unleashed could potentially hint at a remake in the making.
Why an Official Sonic Unleashed Remake Could Be Too Late
It’s long overdue for Sonic Unleashed to be re-released on contemporary gaming platforms. Being tied to the sixth and seventh generations of consoles has made it challenging for fans, particularly those who have recently joined the series due to the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, to play this game. Despite being over 15 years old, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Sonic Unleashed remain among the series’ most visually impressive titles. While Xbox Series X and Series S owners can enjoy the Xbox 360 version at a higher resolution and frame rate, exceeding the original hardware’s limitations, this does not eliminate the demand for a remake that is accessible on all modern systems.
It’s possible that Sega was outmaneuvered by dedicated Sonic fans. The fan-made project, “Sonic Unleashed Recompiled,” effectively transfers the Xbox 360 version of the game onto PCs without requiring emulation. Many players find this unofficial port to be the ideal way to experience the game, boasting advantages like ultrawide support and modding possibilities that even the Xbox Series X and S lack. Given the dedication and effort poured into this fan project by the hedgehog development team, it would be challenging for an official remake to match up.
Although players enjoyed the Sonic Generations Unleashed Project mod, it merely recreated the daylight stages from Sonic Unleashed. While these levels are highly praised, the remaster provides the full experience, running natively on PC and including Werehog stages and cutscenes – aspects that were not available in the previous compilation. Given this, officially porting the game to PC by Sega might not offer anything new for fans who can already play it as is. Nevertheless, a remake could potentially incorporate features that even recompilation players would find appealing.
How Sega’s Remake Can Set Itself Apart From the Recompilation
Additional Features That Only an Official Remake Can Offer
Although Sonic Unleashed Recompiled is widely recognized as one of the top fan-made Sonic games, its primary limitation lies in being exclusively designed for PC use. Consequently, console enthusiasts miss out on this experience. The main contemporary alternative for console players is to enjoy the Xbox 360 version on Xbox Series X or Series S. An authentic remake would presumably be released across all current-generation consoles, guaranteeing that every Sonic fan has the opportunity to revisit Sonic Unleashed.
It’s worth mentioning that when referring to the Sonic Unleashed recompilation project, it’s only transferring the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of the game onto PC. This means that the Wii, PS2 versions, along with the mobile adaptation of Sonic Unleashed, remain exclusive to their original platforms. Although they carry the same title, these earlier releases featured distinctly different level designs compared to their high-definition counterparts, providing players unique experiences for each location. If an official remake were to occur, it could potentially incorporate and redesign this content to align with the visual style of the HD version.
Sonic Unleashed Could Get the Shadow Generations Treatment
In more contemporary times, views on the original ‘Sonic Unleashed’ game have shifted. Initially, it was met with criticism due to the less-than-favorable response to the games leading up to it, particularly the 2006 reboot of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, often referred to as ‘Sonic 06’ among fans. Some continue to express dissatisfaction with certain aspects of the game, such as the introduction of the Werehog, which they feel disrupts the traditional Sonic narrative and leads to a slower-paced gaming experience. However, others argue that Knuckles the Echidna, who could have served as a powerful brawler in the game, would have been more suitable for this role.
It’s highly unlikely that Knuckles would replace Werehog in an official remake of Sonic Unleashed. This is because, as fans have grown to appreciate this form and the gameplay associated with it, especially after its recompilation. The approach for a remake could mirror that of Sonic X Shadow Generations, which was originally confined to the PS3 and Xbox 360 but later gained renewed popularity by incorporating a substantial new side story.
In the original version of “Sonic Unleashed”, Knuckle the Echidna was not featured. Introducing additional content centered around him in a remake of “Sonic Unleashed” could help flesh out the timeline of “Sonic the Hedgehog” and provide a unique gameplay experience that the recompiled version, “Sonic Unleashed Recompiled”, cannot offer. Although mods have been created to insert Knuckles in place of the Werehog, none of these modifications have managed to expand upon the existing lore.
In the game Shadow Generations, Shadow’s skills go beyond Sonic’s moveset from Generations, offering players unique ways to engage with levels that align perfectly with the character. Similarly, an expansion for Sonic Unleashed could broaden Knuckles’ mechanics in a hack-and-slash gameplay style while maintaining his treasure-hunting skills from earlier games. Since Knuckles was redeemed by Sonic Frontiers and its prequel animation Divergence, it would be fantastic to play as this version of the echidna in a story that’s all about him.
Following the impressive efforts by the Sonic community in recreating Sonic Unleashed for their own enjoyment through a recompilation, Sega might find it challenging to launch an official direct port now. The PC version of the recompiled Sonic Unleashed offers everything fans would anticipate from a remake and even more features. Consequently, an official release may not provide much novelty without substantial modifications or extra content to differentiate it from the fan project. If Sega is suggesting a Sonic Unleashed remake, they should be ready to offer additional content if they wish to keep pace with the fan-made project.
