September 2024 is the End of an Era for Nintendo

As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for all things Nintendo, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment as September 2024 rolls by without a traditional Nintendo Direct. For eight years straight, we’ve been graced with a grand unveiling of Nintendo’s upcoming lineup around this time, and this year feels like a bit of an anomaly.

For the first time since September 2016, Nintendo has not hosted a Direct for the month of September. There was a Nintendo Partner Showcase and Indie World in August, but neither showcase revolved around Nintendo’s upcoming line-up of games. As to why there wasn’t one, that’s anyone’s guess – but it could range from not having anything to show to the company being too busy behind the scenes with the upcoming reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, which is set to take place before March 31, 2025.

While it’s not guaranteed that a Nintendo Direct will occur before this year ends, there seems to be a reason why Nintendo might not have one in the month they typically launch their major shows. The last time they did a September Direct was back in 2023, and during that event, they unveiled games such as the long-awaited remake of “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door”, “Princess Peach Showtime”, and additional DLC for “Splatoon 3”. Many other exciting titles were also revealed at that time.

It’s possible that Nintendo might unexpectedly release a Nintendo Direct on September 30. Should that occur, we’ll update our information, but at this moment, it seems highly improbable. If they did, it would be the latest September Direct ever held, as most of them typically take place around the mid-month instead.

Typically, the Nintendo Direct presentations serve as the primary annual showcase for Nintendo’s biggest releases. While occasional Indie World, Mobile Direct, or Super Nintendo World events may occur beforehand, a main first-party presentation is usually absent from these preceding events. It’s possible that the August Indie World event was intended to create room for a larger Nintendo Direct later in the year, although this is merely speculation. For now, fans can only wait for an official announcement from Nintendo regarding any potential event this year. However, it appears uncertain that there won’t be a significant first-party Nintendo Direct in 2021, marking uncharted waters for the company.

  • September 1, 2016

For eight consecutive years, we’ve seen a Nintendo Direct event in September. This year marks the first break in that streak since 2015. It wouldn’t be logical for Nintendo to hold an event simply because it’s September if they weren’t ready. Perhaps next year, in September 2025, the company will resume its regular schedule, but the absence this year has certainly raised some eyebrows compared to the past eight years.

Among all plausible theories, the one that seems most logical is that Nintendo is actively working on developing the next version of Nintendo Switch, often referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2. Given how enticing the leaks about the Switch 2 have been, fans might be understanding if that’s the case. As for now, we can only wait and see, but this phase in Nintendo’s history is drawing to a close.
