Sequels Where You Play The Last Hero’s Descendant

Summary

  • Real life has no redo buttons, but in video games, a family line is one way to transfer the “protagonist” role from parent to child.
  • Video game sequels often follow descendants to evolve the story while staying connected to its roots.
  • Games like Fallout 2 and Gears of War 4 showcase the legacy of the hero through their descendants.

As someone who has spent countless hours navigating through the labyrinthine world of video games, I must say that the interconnected narratives in these games have truly captivated me. The way they weave together past and present, characters and events, is nothing short of a masterclass in storytelling.

In our everyday lives, we don’t have the luxury of restarting, rewriting history, or undoing mistakes with a simple reset. It seems as though everyone is navigating this complex game called life on the hardest difficulty setting, where “game over” truly means the end. The closest analogue might be the ability to procreate, passing the role from one generation to another, whether they consciously accept it or not.

In contrast to real-world scenarios, video game players have the convenience of switching between characters effortlessly. This flexibility allows developers to place the fate of a series’ primary character in the player’s decision, or even introduce a time leap while maintaining a continuous family narrative. By placing the player in the role of a descendant, the story can organically progress while still preserving its original connections. Proceed with caution as spoilers about family lineage may follow.

6. Fable 2

The Orphaned Branch Of The Oakvale Family Tree

In the original Fable, the focus was heavily on player choice, particularly within the good vs evil spectrum. It’s clear that if a sequel were to follow, it would need a new protagonist, as players might find it unusual or unappealing to see their one-horned demon character deprived of its power for a fresh storyline.

In many fantasy stories, family history plays a significant role, so it’s logical to establish the destitute orphan from Fable 2 as a descendant of Oakvale’s Hero. However, if you look closely at the lore, you might have noticed that the Hero of Oakvale, being a character who ultimately chose the path of good (or at least so in the end), would still be alive after a 600-year gap between the two games, as he wouldn’t have killed his sister, Theresa, to fully embrace evil. Instead, she is still living.

5. Tekken 3

A Constantly-Evolving Family Feud

At the core of the Tekken series, despite its multitude of characters and their complex backstories, lies a tale deeply rooted in family strife. Initially, Kazuya Mishima served as the main character, driven by a desire for retribution against his father, Heihachi, who had once cast him off a cliff to gauge his strength.

In Tekken 3, set 20 years after the events, the lead character is Jin Kazama, son of Kazuya who assumed his demonic Devil form as the final boss in the sequel and then vanished. Over the series, the role of the protagonist has been passed around among family members, some of whom were believed to be dead but reappear for another bout in the Iron Fist tournament.

4. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

Returning Again As Day Follows Night

In a different game called “Golden Sun: Dark Dawn,” we follow the journey of the offspring from the original heroes who saved the world of Weyard thirty years ago, as depicted in one of the best GBA titles, simply known as “Golden Sun.

As experts in their field, they are assigned a challenging task: the “psynergy whirlpools” pose a fresh danger to the equilibrium of the world once more. What’s heartwarming is that, despite being adepts themselves, their children have formed close bonds with one another.

3. Fallout 2

The Lonely Legacy Of The Vault Savior

At the conclusion of the initial game, the Vault Dweller was expelled from their residence and compelled to traverse the Wasteland on their own, despite having averted a water calamity and thwarted the Master’s schemes that threatened all of humanity. In Fallout 2, the hero’s actions were not forgotten.

Over the past 80 years following the founding of the village, an entire lore has developed around them. The tale goes that one member, selected because they were tasked with performing all the difficult tasks, often referred to as the Chosen One, must fulfill a legend when called upon to recover the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, or GECK, a tool that could potentially revive their struggling village.

2. Gears of War 4

Rise Of A Fresh-Faced Fenix

Following decades of fighting in the Locust and Lambent wars, Marcus Fenix ultimately retires from active duty, settling down with Anya during the 25-year hiatus between Gears of War 3 and Gears of War 4. Despite abandoning the armed forces of the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) after their power grab, his son, J.D., decides to enlist instead.

After long last, J.D. and his companions decide to leave COG behind. However, their departure reveals a fresh danger, which J.D. nicknames “the swarm.” The newly formed group then turns to the wisdom of their old ally Marcus for guidance. Together, they delve into the mysteries surrounding this seemingly omnipresent collective military force that poses a grave threat to what remains of mankind.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

Unearthing A Long, Snaking Legacy

While the Metal Gear series initially introduced Solid Snake in the original Metal Gear, it was actually Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater that laid the groundwork for the military conspiracy saga. This game features Naked Snake (also known as Big Boss). In Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, we learned what became of the main character from both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2, as well as the destiny of significant characters from Snake Eater, such as EVA who served as Snake’s surrogate mother.

In much the same way a snake coils before striking, the Metal Gear Solid series often catches players off guard with unexpected twists. One such surprising moment comes when Old Snake meets Big Boss for the last time. After recognizing him as his son, Big Boss is eventually defeated by FOXDIE, a lethal agent that Old Snake had willingly accepted, thus concluding the tale.
