But before we jump to the conclusion that Frieren is the most powerful character in “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End“, a new character named Serie enters the scene. As a mage who has lived longer than Frieren, doubts begin to surface about whether Serie is stronger than Frieren.

Who Exactly is Serie?

In a more casual tone, consider this: Serie is an elven sorceress who’s twice as old as Frieren and serves as the leader of the Continental Magic Association. People often call her a living spellbook due to her extensive knowledge. She has mentored many human mages, including the legendary Flamme among them. Although we haven’t witnessed Serie in action yet, there’s plenty of evidence that indicates her immense power.

  • She is like a living grimoire and knows countless spells. She also has the ability to teach spells to other mages. In Episode 28, she teaches Fern a spell as a reward for clearing the First-Class Mage Exam.
  • She has an unmeasurable amount of mana, and her mana control is flawless. In Episode 27, Lernen compares Frieren’s unrestricted mana equally to Serie’s restricted mana. Though Lernen was able to see fluctuations in Frieren’s mana immediately, he failed to detect Serie’s mana suppression even after years. Having lived twice as long as Frieren, Serie at least has mana twice as much as Frieren.
  • Serie holds access to immensely powerful spells. In Episode 21, we see the barrier created by Serie. Breaking the barrier seems like an impossible feat and even Frieren only manages to break it after deeper analysis.

Frieren’s True Potential

From what I’ve gathered in our world of magic, it’s undeniable that Serie possesses a greater magical prowess compared to Frieren. Yet, Frieren is no pushover; she demonstrated her strength when she effortlessly vanquished Aura and notably joined forces with Himmel the Hero to defeat the Demon King. However, even after these remarkable feats, Serie expresses that Frieren’s true power remains untapped. Instead of pursuing greater power, Frieren opted for a life of solitude over the years. She dedicated her time to amassing an array of spells that might seem superfluous to other mages. This undoubtedly indicates that Frieren prioritizes harmony and balance over brute strength. Had she sought power, we would have witnessed a far more potent mage than the one we currently know.

Despite being quite young, Frieren possesses a remarkable ability to overcome demons. Her mana management, in particular, is exceptionally polished.

Because Frieren’s journey primarily revolves around emotions, it’s unlikely that she will outmatch Serie in terms of raw power.
