Seven Years After Miscrits Shut Down, Original Creator Joins Fan Revival Project

As a gamer who lived through the golden age of Facebook gaming and was deeply attached to the vibrant world of Miscrits, this news has brought a wave of nostalgia and excitement that I can hardly contain! The memories of collecting those adorable creatures, exploring their unique habitats, and engaging in friendly competition with fellow gamers are still fresh in my mind.

In the year 2011, Broken Bulb Games introduced a creature-collecting game on Facebook named Miscrits. This vibrant, sleek adaptation of the genre emphasized individuality for each critter, as stated by Broken Bulb, and it became one of the most thriving games on Facebook until its time eventually passed. Unfortunately, like many other Facebook games, Miscrits was closed down in 2017.

Approximately seven years after its original release, Broken Bulb collaborates with a passionate fan, known as GK who leads the revival team, to reintroduce their cherished Facebook game to gamers. The aim is to launch it on app stores and currently, it’s in the alpha testing stage. GK, along with other members from the project’s Discord community, shared insights about the revival with Game Rant.

How Miscrits Returned After Seven Years

When the shifting market and reduced interest in Facebook’s gaming platform significantly impacted games such as Farmville and Miscrits, it’s important to note that Miscrits was not immune to this trend. Robert Nelson, founder of Broken Bulb, clarified that while there were many whispers and theories at the time, the reality was quite straightforward: the player base for Facebook games was dwindling. Consequently, maintaining Miscrits became more costly than the game’s earnings, pushing Broken Bulb into a situation where they were operating at an unprofitable loss.

The individual heading the revival of the popular game known as Miscrits encountered an issue where they couldn’t log into their favorite title one day, which prompted them to work towards reintroducing Miscrits to the gaming community. A project to develop a playable version has been in progress for some time now, and a trial run for a fully restored mobile version of Miscrits that bears a strong resemblance to the game that ceased existence in 2017 is currently being conducted as an alpha test.

Initially, there was consideration about launching Miscrits on mobile devices, but Broken Bulg didn’t find it feasible seven years ago. However, in today’s context, it’s a far more practical possibility. GK is now prepared to take up this significant challenge.

Miscrits is an exceptionally renowned game, requiring considerable effort and resources from its creators to bring it to Facebook. Sketching a single Miscrit can be challenging. Once all the content from the original has been incorporated, we can expect a continuation of the narrative, fresh locations, and novel Miscrits. There’s still much work to do before the new edition launches, but the end result is expected to be significantly improved!

Before the game could even be launched, there would inevitably arise the matter of rights. Since Nelson owned the intellectual property (and numerous assets) for the original Miscrits, it was essential for GK’s small team to secure formal permission to use the Miscrits name and assets. Initially, GK hesitated, but a community member from Discord managed to locate Nelson and initiated contact through LinkedIn, detailing the project and discussing the licensing requirements. At first, Nelson proposed a figure that, while quite reasonable for a corporate entity, exceeded the financial capacity of a fan-driven project.

Ultimately, Nelson hopped aboard as a consultant for our project, giving us the green light. He made the announcement on Discord, the revival’s chat hub, on November 5. Seeing the massive backing we had gathered and learning that our team intended to go legit with the revival of this title left Nelson smiling. Though the specifics about the deal between Nelson and us are kept under wraps, he shared that what convinced him to back our project was chatting with someone who sounded committed and professional, capable of entering into a legal agreement for the redevelopment of this game.

After successfully overcoming that obstacle and acquiring the accompanying assets, GK was able to forge ahead vigorously with the public resurgence of the original Facebook version of Facebook classic. At present, none of the original Miscrits team members have joined in, but Nelson hinted that some other members from the Broken Bulb team have previously shown interest over the years.

There’s no need for guessing right now about when it might come out, but rest assured, enthusiasts of the old-school Facebook gaming era and those who adore the game Miscrits, in particular, can look forward to welcoming their beloved Miscrit back into their homes very soon.
