Severance Just Dropped a HUGE Twist! But WTF Does It Mean?

Summary

  • The latest Severance episode offered up a major revelation as Helena was masquerading as Helly.
  • Irv sacrifices himself for the group to expose her.
  • The episode doesn’t come close to answering why Mark is central to everything, including his wife’s role in the company.

In the latest season of Severance, the series continues to keep viewers guessing by not providing straightforward answers and instead adding more depth to each revelation. The fourth episode, titled “Woe’s Hollow,” sheds light on Helly’s identity, or rather, identities. It is revealed that during the unsettling company retreat in the forest, it was actually Helena Eagan, not the severed Helly R, who was in control. This may help answer a question that has been hanging since the start of Season 2: whether Helena had been posing as Helly throughout the entire season. However, the final scenes of the episode hint that the severed Helly R is still around, leaving us to wonder if Helena was in charge all along or if she appeared only for this trek into the chilling woods shrouded in snow.

If Helena was indeed herself during that occasion, why did she disguise herself as Helly? Was this a calculated move for some corporate intrigue, a larger business plan, or a personal matter? Furthermore, the episode suggests there might be inconsistencies—could Helly R have been conscious (skipping days or times when other Passed Procedures employees mentioned her) but unwilling to admit it? Just like always, Severance leaves its viewers questioning every aspect, making the enigmas more intriguing as the season progresses.

Irving’s Parting Gift In Severance

In “Woe’s Hollow,” an episode of Severance, there was a mix of sweet and bitter moments. The main antagonist of the Apple TV+ series was defeated, but this victory came at a great cost: Irv B. made the selfless decision to give up his life for the well-being of the group.

It’s clear that things were heading towards this point since Season 2 began. Ever since then, Irv has shown signs of no longer wanting to be involved. Initially, he was a dedicated supporter of Lumon, but when his love interest, Burt, left, it became the final blow after Irv started to suspect that the company’s leadership didn’t prioritize his well-being.

Initially loyal to Lumon, the departure of his beloved, Burt, served as the last push after he began to understand that those in charge were not prioritizing his well-being.

Following a heated argument about Helly and Mark seeming fond of each other, Irv wanders off alone into the forest, ultimately dozing off and entering a dream state where he solves a puzzle. It was revealed in this dream that Helly R wasn’t actually Helly R but rather Helena. Initially refusing to admit it, Irv resorted to threatening to drown Helly/Helena until she confessed her true identity. At this point, Mr. Milchick activated a switch to bring Helena’s Innie back into the group. Consequently, Irv was promptly dismissed from his position, and as we now understand, an Innie being terminated results in their demise.

More Questions And Few Answers

It appears that Helena has adopted the identity of Helly R on multiple occasions, which raises questions about her involvement with the group. She might have been part of the group all along, or she could have joined them specifically for the forest outing. The intriguing aspect is why she would only return for that particular excursion.

With Helly R.’s return, we can expect some of the answers to become clearer in the upcoming episode. Her recollections and forgetfulness are likely to uncover more about the situation. Will she discuss her experiences during the Overtime Protocol incident (as if no time has elapsed since then) or will she express bewilderment over how she transitioned from the office to the woods?

Additionally, a query has arisen since the conclusion of Episode 3 that demands attention: “Who Survived?” This question, in essence, delves into the process of reintegration and the reason behind Mark S’s presence as an Innie instead of his full self.

Mark Continues To Be Central To Everything

One persistent query regarding the series Severance is why Mark plays such a pivotal role and seems to be intertwined with his wife as well? His importance is so significant that Helena deliberately tried to charm him, but it’s unclear if there’s a larger objective, other than testing whether he could overcome his feelings for Helly despite his marriage to Gemma. However, this theory doesn’t align well since Innie Mark can’t recall Gemma.

From the start, Mark stood out as a unique asset at Lumon. After the Outer Party Transfer, they didn’t want to let him go. It was he who caught the attention of both Ms. Cobel and Selvig, leading them to attempt friendship with him in the external world.

Indeed, it’s worth noting that his wife, too, was a Lumon employee in a role similar to HR. It’s puzzling why Mark has become the focal point throughout the series of Severance. However, the episode “Woe’s Hollow” made it clear just how pivotal he is as the story progresses.
