As a seasoned movie-goer and binge-watcher who’s seen more than my fair share of series with unresolved storylines, I must say I’m pleasantly reassured by the news about Severance. It’s refreshing to know that creator Dan Erickson had an endgame in mind from the beginning, and that they’re sticking to it despite the show’s extended hiatus.
The anticipated return of Severance is now within sight, following its lengthy hiatus, and fans are buzzing with anticipation for resolutions to the numerous plot twists the Apple TV+ series has left hanging. What’s more, it appears that the show will remain faithful to the original plan it had established from the start.
In a nutshell, “Severance” is a gripping psychological sci-fi series on Apple TV+ that focuses on the enigmatic Lumon Industries employees. Their work requires such secrecy that they’re compelled to undergo an unconventional procedure, splitting their professional and personal identities. This process essentially creates two distinct individuals within them. Throughout Season 1 of “Severance,” actors like Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, and Zack Cherry uncover pivotal truths about their lives outside work, which could potentially have severe repercussions as we move into Season 2.
Severance Creator Confirms There’s An Endgame
Prior to the debut of Season 2, Dan Erickson, the show’s creator and producer, revealed in an interview with Collider that he had a planned ending for Severance from the start. He stated, “I had a concept of where it was heading, which is still mostly the same today.” Erickson mentioned that they aimed to preserve room for the number of seasons while keeping the final destination in sight. Furthermore, he explained that Season 2 concentrates more on establishing the foundation for the ultimate ending by saying, “It definitely leans more towards creating the connections necessary for where we ultimately intend to go.” Regarding the total number of seasons Severance might have, Erickson chose not to reveal any details.
From the start, I had a general concept of where the story would head, which has remained largely consistent up until now. While I didn’t have five full seasons plotted out initially, as we pitched it to various platforms, my goal was to secure a distributor with Apple being the eventual choice. During this process, we essentially pre-produced the first season to demonstrate that it wasn’t just a peculiar pilot, but rather, we had a clear vision for its future direction. Therefore, there was an endgame in mind, and while much of the first season was mapped out, we weren’t certain if it would become a one-season series or run for multiple seasons. We aimed to keep things flexible.
It’s comforting to know this, especially considering the challenges Severance has faced during its second season production. Despite delays, Season 2 of Severance is finally set to premiere on Apple TV+, marking almost three years since filming began. Ben Stiller, the show’s producer and director, attributed these delays primarily to Hollywood guild strikes and the show’s methodical production process. He also clarified that there were no significant conflicts among the writing team behind the scenes.
Can Severance Stick the Landing of All Its Complex Story Ideas?
The intricate psychological storyline of the series “Severance” has raised some questions about whether it will be able to wrap up all its twists effectively in the end. With no clear ending in sight, this is a pitfall that has tripped up numerous popular shows before, like HBO’s flagship show “Game of Thrones,” which ran out of material when it surpassed George R.R. Martin’s books. However, Erickson’s remarks give us hope that “Severance” is guided by a well-thought-out plan and knows its destination, regardless of how many seasons it requires to get there.
Regarding what’s in store for Season 2 of the series “Severance”, it appears that some long-awaited questions about the show, especially concerning Ms. Casey’s disappearance, will finally be addressed. Moreover, actors hinted during their Collider interview that the fourth episode of Season 2 could be a standout, as it offers something remarkably distinct from any other episode produced thus far.
Severance Season 2 will be released on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025.
