This article contains spoilers for Severance Season 2
The second season of “Severance” has concluded, and much like the finale of Season 1, it appears that life for both the Innies and Outties at Lumon, Eagan will never be the same. Whether these changes prove beneficial or detrimental remains to be seen. One of the captivating aspects of “Severance” is its ability to keep viewers guessing, making it difficult to immediately discern whether the transformations are positive or negative.
In the thrilling continuation of Severance, although Season 1’s finale hinted at major transformations ahead, most of Season 2 seemed more like a step backwards from the advancements we’d witnessed. A significant contributor to this rollback was Irv’s departure and Helly’s return as Helena Eagan within the office walls. The series also finally revealed the plot point it had been subtly suggesting all along – Mark is not merely a central figure but holds the key to “everything.” For a brief moment, he managed to unlock what Lumon has long anticipated him to uncover. But, the implications for the future remain shrouded in uncertainty.
What Happens In Severance Season 2?
In the second season of Severance, Mark returned to Lumon following a longer-than-weekend break to contemplate his situation. Initially, he was compelled to collaborate with a completely fresh squad, but he persuaded Lumon to reinstate Irving, Dylan, and Helly instead. However, all is not well and resolved, particularly regarding Irv, who’s grown weary of life at Lumon.
In my film critique perspective, Irv, our protagonist, ultimately manages to sever all ties with Lumon Industries forever. It’s during the inaugural ORTBO meeting that sets the stage for this dramatic departure. Here, he uncovers a shocking truth – Helly R is none other than Helena Eagan. This revelation pushes him to an extreme act; he contemplates drowning her in a river, hoping it would compel Mr. Milchick to confess their long-running con.
However, the story doesn’t end there for Irv. His Innie, Burt, discovers that Irving is actually a spy. With his safety at stake, Burt convinces Irv that he must bid farewell not just to Lumon, but also to Eagan, and disappear from town. This double-edged departure signifies the end of an era for our protagonist, as he navigates through the complexities of truth, love, and survival in this corporate maze.
Burt discovers that Irving is actually a secret agent, and persuades him to depart the city for his own protection.
Recently, the final stage has been established as Lumon prepares Gemma/Ms. Casey for a unique type of terminated position. Mark is undergoing reintegration, but it’s progressing more gradually than it did for his colleague. Ms. Cobel has now become an ally to Mark, having understood that Lumon does not value her as she deserves, or perhaps at all.

The final episode of “Severance” continues with Mark, Devon, and Cobel visiting a severance birthing facility to allow Innie Mark and Outtie Mark to converse via video camera. Despite this long-awaited dialogue, they fail to come to an understanding about Lumon’s fate as Innie Mark understands that if Outtie Mark finds Gemma, he will perish. As the sun sets, they part ways. Furthermore, Innie Mark realizes that if Outtie Mark and Gemma end up together, there can be no future for him and Helly.

At Lumon, Mark completes Cold Harbor, realizing it represents the various personas that Gemma exhibited in “Chikhai Bardo”, Episode 7 of Severance. Yet, once he wraps up Cold Harbor, he can’t escape to locate Gemma as Mr. Milchick organizes a festivity, complete with a marching band. Later on, Helly and Dylan, who opted to stay despite the chance to quit, manage to divert and detain Mr. Millchick, allowing Mark to search for Gemma.
Following an encounter with the consistently intimidating Lorne Eagan, Mark makes his way to where Gemma is confined and discovers her at the culmination of a test, which appears to be Lumon verifying that an unusual form of severance has functioned as intended. It appears this novel type of severance will enable them to reach the final phase of their plan.
How Does Severance Season 2 End?

Apart from rescuing Gemma, Mark manages to shatter her conditioning due to severance. It appeared as though their story would have a fairy-tale ending. However, the only means of escape lies on the floor where she was severed, which reinstates Outer Mark once more. Despite understanding that he should save Gemma, right when he’s about to proceed, he recognizes that he doesn’t necessarily have to carry out this action.
Instead, Mark S. spins around and dashes back toward Helly, with both of them fleeing down the hallway. On the other hand, Gemma is stranded on the opposite side of the door, frantically calling for her husband to return as they swiftly move away, keeping her safe from the destructive chips and causing her to scream out in distress.
