As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of iconic characters like Pac-Man. From the simple, yet captivating original to its numerous interpretations, Pac-Man has always managed to keep its charm while staying true to its roots. However, the recent announcement of Shadow Labyrinth has left me intrigued and a little bewildered.
Over the past 40 years or so, Pac-Man has experienced numerous variations and adaptations. From being an iconic arcade game to some more innovative versions, Pac-Man has had quite a remarkable journey. Though there have been many different games released under its name, even when they didn’t follow the usual patterns, Pac-Man has mainly stayed true to its original genre concepts and playful, animated character design.
Currently, Shadow Labyrinth is set to challenge the established dynamics of Pac-Man. Unveiled at this year’s Game Awards, the reveal trailer for Shadow Labyrinth presents a significantly altered depiction of the familiar yellow character compared to what fans are generally accustomed to. The announcement of Shadow Labyrinth followed closely behind Amazon and Blur Studios’ Secret Level episode “Circle,” which functioned as a prelude to it. With an ominous atmosphere and gameplay mechanics that deviate from the norm, this upcoming title promises a new perspective on the round character. Representatives from Pac-Man Brand Marketing at Bandai Namco Entertainment America, Knoah Piasek, and producer Seigo Aizawa discussed with Game Rant the motivation and design behind Shadow Labyrinth’s dark portrayal of both the character and the world.
Shadow Labyrinth Developers Discuss its Sinister Take on Pac-Man
The unsettling atmosphere of “Secret Level” might have taken many viewers by surprise, as it presents a darker, seemingly unfriendly version of the beloved character Pac-Man. Similarly, the upcoming game “Shadow Labyrinth” will maintain this hostile environment and present a less friendly rendition of Pac-Man, reminiscent of the one seen in “Circle”. When asked about the creative choice behind this new direction for the IP, Aizawa elaborated:
When considering the iconic game of Pac-Man, it’s well-known that it’s timeless and suitable for all ages. Our goal was to offer a fresh perspective on this classic and develop a more ominous version of Pac-Man and its universe to attract a different demographic. We examined the fundamental aspects of the maze and eating mechanics, and how, in an instant, the situation can change drastically, transforming Pac-Man into the dominant predator. This is the concept behind Shadow Labyrinth’s interpretation.
Piasek noted that the initial response to “Shadow Labyrinth” has been intense at moments. While some enthusiasts wholeheartedly adopted its concept, others were somewhat startled by the significant change in aesthetic and approach. However, this reaction is exactly what was intended, according to Piasek.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been all about catching folks off guard with our unique approach. There’s a bit of humor in it, considering our character goes by Puck – a nod to the original name of everyone’s favorite maze-runner, Pac-Man. We aim to elicit that “what the heck?” reaction – that’s the exact surprise we’re after!
Shadow Labyrinth Will Still Contain Shades of Classic Pac-Man Aspects
In the game ‘Shadow Labyrinth’, players will assume the role of Swordsman No. 8, a humanoid character. They’ll have Puck, a reinterpretation of Pac-Man, as their companion and guide. Although it bears a strong resemblance to a Metroidvania game, Shadow Labyrinth is marketed as a side-scrolling action platformer. Aizawa mentioned that this style suits the challenge of creating a darker version of Pac-Man, while also aligning with Shadow Labyrinth’s emphasis on its distinctive maze and consumption elements.
While Shadow Labyrinth seeks to venture into uncharted territory for the Pac-Man franchise, it won’t completely abandon its original elements. As Aizawa mentioned, there will be several features and mechanics reminiscent of familiar aspects, with one example shown in the trailer being particularly evident.
Upon a closer inspection, you’ll notice a scene where The Swordsman undergoes a transformation into Puck, mirroring the characteristic Pac-Man maneuver. This hidden element is integrated within our game design. I believe that once enthusiasts play the game, its self-explanatory nature will become apparent. They’ll observe and discuss this occurrence, and you may even find Easter eggs and tributes to Pac-Man throughout the gameplay.
Shadow Labyrinth aims to preserve the essential elements of Pac-Man’s genetic makeup, but at the same time, it delves into darker, more adult themes to offer a fresh and captivating adventure that appeals not only to dedicated fans but also to newcomers.
The game titled “Shadow Labyrinth” is set to be launched between now and the year 2025 on Nintendo Switch, personal computers, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
