Shadow Labyrinth Has About 30 Boss Types

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the reveal of Shadow Labyrinth during the 2024 Game Awards left me utterly thrilled and intrigued! The prospect of a new Pac-Man game set within the world of Secret Level, promising unexplored territories, has me eagerly awaiting its release.

In the aftermath of the 2024 Game Awards, a variety of thrilling unveilings and debuts were showcased, as is customary with each year’s event. Among these revelations, one that stood out as particularly shocking was none other than Shadow Labyrinth. Initially, it might not have been apparent, but Shadow Labyrinth is in fact an upcoming game based on the iconic character Pac-Man, taking place within the same universe as the “Secret Level” episode. This new title aims to venture into uncharted territories for the IP in numerous ways.

As a gaming enthusiast, I was utterly blown away by the electrifying gameplay demonstrated in the trailer for Shadow Labyrinth. What particularly caught my attention was the hint of a grueling sequence of formidable bosses that seemed to lie ahead. Recently, I had an enlightening conversation with producer Seigo Aizawa and Knoah Piasek, the Pac-Man Brand Marketing Manager at Bandai Namco Entertainment America, who shed some light on the diverse array of challenging bosses players can anticipate battling in Shadow Labyrinth.

Shadow Labyrinth Will Have a Big Bounty of Bosses for Players to Battle

In the game “Shadow Labyrinth“, players assume the character of Swordsman No. 8, referred to as the “Chosen One.” Entrapped within a lethal labyrinth and aided by Puck (a version of Pac-Man), they must traverse through various challenging environments teeming with ominous creatures and intimidating bosses. When queried about the variety of these bosses players will have to conquer, Aizawa explained,… (continued in next message)

Concerning the boss encounters, you’ll find approximately 30 distinct types. Each boss has its own distinctive trait. To defeat these adversaries, players must gain specific skills, adopt a particular strategy, or transform into Puck. The combat involves numerous tactical concepts and mechanics.

Although Piasek conceded that Shadow Labyrinth bears some resemblance to the Metroidvania genre, it’s formally categorized as a “2D action platformer” for easier understanding.

Shadow Labyrinth Will See Players Go From Prey to Predator

In addition, Aizawa disclosed that the game’s bosses share similar motifs with the overall theme of Shadow Labyrinth. The concept of consumption is present, infused with a grimy sci-fi atmosphere, and it seems that many monsters and bosses draw inspiration from various animals. Discussing the inspirations and design principles behind the bosses in Shadow Labyrinth, Aizawa pointed out.

We wanted to incorporate that dark sci-fi taste into it. We referenced a lot of ancient animals, and those types of monsters and bosses are included in it. The little sneak peek in the announcement trailer really is just a small portion of the whole. When you start playing and exploring, you’ll find many different types of stages and bosses, all designed in certain ways.

In the game “Shadow Labyrinth“, players will face a multitude of challenging bosses that test their skills and strategy. To conquer these formidable foes, fans must gather essential items, master their use in combat, and apply their knowledge to outsmart each boss. Shadow Labyrinth will also incorporate an intriguing twist on a classic element of “Pac-Man“, where eating increases power, by applying it to boss battles. This means players will switch roles with enemies, transforming into the dominant predator as they progress, armed with the right gear and tactics, ultimately ascending to the top of the food chain in “Shadow Labyrinth“.

Shadow Labyrinth is scheduled for launch between now and the year 2025 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
