This article contains spoilers from One Piece‘s Elbaf arc.
Summary
- Shanks is a monstrous pirate feared for his majestic strength and Haki abilities.
- Shanks fought powerful individuals like Mihawk, Blackbeard, Loki, Kaido, and Whitebeard.
- Shanks clashed with formidable foes like Mihawk, Blackbeard, and Kaido, showcasing his strength.
Among the characters in “One Piece,” Shanks stands out as one of the mightiest pirates and an incredibly formidable figure. He’s recognized as one of the Four Sea Emperors, and his power is such that only a select few can compete with in the narrative. What sets him apart is his mastery of Haki, a skill that instills fear in many “One Piece” inhabitants.
Of course, given his profession as a pirate, Shanks has engaged in numerous battles against formidable foes throughout the years. He’s managed to defeat several of them, but not without sustaining injuries from others. It’s widely believed that some of these adversaries are legendary in terms of their power, which makes his encounters with them all the more remarkable.
5. Mihawk

- Clashed: Multiple times in the past
- Winner: N/A
Dracule Mihawk, known as the mightiest swordsman worldwide, boasts an impressive lineage and formidable strength. In his past, he was a fierce competitor of Shanks, and it’s rumored they clashed numerous times across the Grand Line. Whitebeard once attested to their previous confrontations, hinting that any battles between them were never decisively resolved.
It’s worth noting that following Shanks’ loss of an arm, Mihawk chose to avoid further battles with him. However, it’s clear that Shanks relished their sword fights, a tradition they shared up until a dozen years ago in the world of One Piece.
4. Blackbeard
- Clashed: Sometime in the Past
- Winner: Unknown
In the world of One Piece, Blackbeard is a formidable outlaw, heading the Blackbeard Pirates, and ranked among the Four Sea Emperors. His bounty, second only to Shanks among active pirates within the narrative, underscores his notoriety. The bond between Blackbeard and Shanks dates far back, making Shanks the character who knows Blackbeard most intimately in the storyline.
It’s said that Shanks and Blackbeard engaged in a fierce battle in their past, with Blackbeard inflicting the iconic scar on Shanks’ eye during this encounter. Shanks held Blackbeard in high regard for his immense power, so much so that he implored Whitebeard to prevent Ace from chasing after Teach due to his awareness of Blackbeard’s strength. Given their past confrontation, it’s no surprise that Shanks is now determined to halt Blackbeard in the New World, with the goal of finally bringing him to a permanent end.
3. Loki
- Clashed: 6 years ago
- Winner: Shanks
Originating from the land of Elbaf, Loki is a highly menacing character with a grandiose self-perception – he thinks he’s the deity of the Sun and the harbinger of doom for the world. His power is so immense that it mirrors an ancient weapon’s might, making him quite formidable. Surprisingly, the World Government has issued a massive 2.6 billion berry bounty on his head, even though he doesn’t have a criminal record as such.
Six years ago, I found myself sailing the vast oceans, a time that marked the rise of Shanks as one of the Yonko pirates. It’s been hinted that these two events might be connected in some way. Indeed, there was a fierce battle between us six years back, a conflict that ended with Shanks emerging victorious and sending me back to Elbaf. Fans are eagerly waiting for more revelations to unfold!
2. Kaido

- Clashed During: Paramount War Arc
- Winner: N/A
In the world of One Piece, until recently, Kaido – a formidable figure among the Four Sea Emperors and arguably the most powerful character – reigned over Wano. Throughout his years of combat, there are only a handful who have earned his respect, and Shanks is undoubtedly one of them.
Prior to the Great Paramount War, Kaido aimed to confront Whitebeard, but Shanks intervened and sent him back to Wano without sustaining any wounds. This unexpected incident left numerous inhabitants of the One Piece world astonished. The details of their encounter remain unclear, yet it’s clear that Shanks skillfully managed his confrontation with Kaido.
1. Whitebeard
- Clashed During: Skypiea Arc
- Winner: N/A
In the annals of piracy lore, I’ve come across few as formidable as the legendary Whitebeard. His strength was such that he could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the famed Pirate King, Roger. It is whispered among seafarers that during their time, Whitebeard was the only pirate who could truly measure up to Roger in a battle. Of course, this discourse excludes Rocks from the discussion.
Whitebeard held an extraordinary power, the Gura Gura no Mi, and he was masterful in wielding all three forms of Haki. Truly, he was a force to be reckoned with on the high seas.
Onboard the Moby Dick, these two characters collided in conflict. Shanks went to see the Emperor to persuade him to halt Ace from chasing Blackbeard. As expected, their discussion turned sour, resulting in a confrontation where they used their Conqueror’s Haki. Fortunately, this altercation was brief and settled swiftly. Nevertheless, Shanks exchanged punches with the mighty Whitebeard.
In the Moby Dick, these two characters came to blows. Shanks sought out the Emperor to prevent Ace from pursuing Blackbeard, but their talk soon turned sour and led to a Haki-fueled confrontation. Thankfully, this skirmish was brief and ended quickly. Despite that, Shanks engaged in fisticuffs with the powerful Whitebeard.
