Sheemie’s Hidden Power: The Critical Character Behind The Dark Tower’s Fate

As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice how minor characters often evolve into pivotal figures in extraordinary fictional series. Remember when the elusive man we captives called “The Others’ leader, Ben Linus, on LOST was just another enigma? Or when Rey, a humble young woman from a desolate planet, emerged as a powerful Jedi in the new Star Wars saga? These seemingly insignificant characters can subtly steer the course of an entire series.

In Stephen King’s epic, The Dark Tower, a character who initially appears minor but significantly alters the grand narrative is none other than Stanley Ruiz, or Sheemi.

In the forthcoming portrayal of ‘The Dark Tower’, it’s essential that the character Sheemie, who plays a vital role in the epic struggle between The White and The Red (Roland and his allies versus the Crimson King’s forces), is given due emphasis. This young, befriended gunslinger, Roland Deschain, will later become the last of his kind, but has a heart-wrenching past marked by abuse and loss. However, his latent power will prove instrumental in shaping the climactic events of the series.

The Dark Tower‘s Stanley ‘Sheemie’ Ruiz, Explained

In a quaint hamlet named Hambry, situated in the area of Mejis, Stanley “Sheemie” Ruiz was initially encountered. Working at a tavern called The Traveller’s Rest, Sheemie frequently endured mistreatment and mockery owing to his cognitive impairment, and the identity of his parents remained uncertain. Remarkably, even the owner of the bar, who also bore the name Stanley Ruiz, acknowledged the possibility that he might be the boy’s father. Upon Roland and his companions Cuthbert and Alain arriving in town, they chanced upon one of the Big Coffin Hunters, Roy Depape, abusing Sheemie within the bar.

As a cinema enthusiast, I couldn’t stand idly by when this unfolded. So, Cuthbert stepped in, accompanied by the Big Coffin Hunters and Gunslingers, and we all found ourselves in a tense standoff, with Roland managing to outmaneuver Eldred Jonas, leading to an impasse. From that moment on, Sheemie admired Roland and his companions, viewing them as his idols. Over time, his devotion to the group compelled him to save Roland’s beloved, Susan. However, she was eventually re-captured and met her tragic end. This series of events led Sheemie to trail the group as they escaped Mejis.

As he journeys back home, Sheemie wrestles with the burden of his guilt over Susan’s capture by Hambry’s inhabitants, and as fate would have it, he encounters a Dogan along the way. There, through an accidental activation of a psychic enhancer, he gains psychic abilities, which include teleportation. With these newfound powers, Sheemie transports himself to his companions and rescues Alain by mending his wounds inflicted by wolves. He later teleports into Maerlyn’s grapefruit, rescuing Roland from a magical trap. In a later incident, he tries to enter Gilead but is mistaken for one of John Farson’s soldiers; however, he is saved when Cuthbert and Alain intervene on his behalf.

After their escape from Gilead, it’s unclear what transpired in the subsequent years, but Roland surmised that the boy was likely separated from them. In truth, however, the Man in Black had Sheemie abducted and taken to End-World, a place called Thunderclap, where he was forced to serve as a breaker for the Crimson King, tasked with destroying the beams supporting the Dark Tower. Years later, as an adult, Sheemie is recognized by Roland, who offers him solace as he continues to bear guilt over Susan’s fate. Together with Ted Brautigan and Dinky Earnshaw, Sheemie aids the Gunslingers in freeing other breakers. However, the repeated use of his powers results in minor brain hemorrhages for Sheemie. After their escape, it is revealed that Sheemie sustained a cut from broken glass, which became infected, and he passed away not long after, leaving Roland to mourn his former friend.

Sheemie’s Important Role In The Dark Tower Series

Stephen King is well-known for creating compelling and adored characters such as Sheemie, who ranges from Douglas “Duddits” Cavell in Dreamcatcher to Tom Cullen in The Stand. Amongst these, Sheemie stands out with an extraordinary ability that surpasses many other breakers in the Dark Tower series; he can teleport not only within his own world but across all worlds. What’s more, Sheemie played a crucial role in Roland’s quest to reach the Dark Tower from the very beginning. It was actually Sheemie who uncovered the Crimson King’s plan to use breakers to demolish the pillars sustaining the Dark Tower, with the tower itself serving as the focal point of all reality that keeps the darkness or chaos called The Prim at bay.

In the forthcoming Mike Flanagan adaptation of The Dark Tower, the characters portraying Stanley “Sheemie” Ruiz, particularly his younger and older selves, play significant roles in shaping the narrative of Roland Deschain’s story. It is through Sheemie that Roland comes to understand the true objectives of the Crimson King’s schemes, which ultimately prompts him to embark on his quest to defend the Dark Tower from the King’s forces. As the story unfolds, Sheemie serves as a critical catalyst for Roland’s journey and remains by his side until close to its end.
