As a dedicated gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that news about Shenmue 3 being transferred to ININ Games is music to my ears! It feels like we’re reliving the days of Death Stranding when its publishing rights reverted back, opening up possibilities for new platforms.
The rights to publish Shenmue 3 have now been passed on to ININ Games, a Japanese publisher, paving the way for numerous thrilling prospects for this iconic series. This announcement coincides with exactly five years since the game was launched in November 2019, implying that YS NET’s original agreement with Embracer Group likely had a time limit, even though Embracer partially financed the production of the game.
In a statement announcing the transfer, YS NET mentioned guiding “Shenmue 3” into its next stage, which is sure to excite series enthusiasts. At the very least, it appears probable that ININ will launch a special edition version of the game, and there’s also speculation that after nearly five years as a PlayStation exclusive, Shenmue 3 might be making its way onto other gaming platforms as well.
The predicament appears strikingly reminiscent of that experienced by Death Stranding, launched merely ten days preceding Shenmue 3. Much like the groundbreaking Kickstarter title, it too debuted as a PlayStation exclusive, but following the reversion of publishing rights for Death Stranding to Kojima Productions earlier this month, they reached an agreement with 505 Games to distribute the game on Xbox platforms.
Xbox and Switch Ports of Shenmue 3 Could be on the Horizon
Through their partnership with ININ Games, it’s plausible that YS NET will release both Xbox and Switch versions of their games. However, fans might also anticipate additional Shenmue content in some form of an expanded edition. In previous interviews, Suzuki mentioned that there were substantial pieces missing from Shenmue 3 due to time and financial limitations; factors that may no longer pose a challenge now that ININ is involved.
It’s important to mention that YS NET and ININ Games have collaborated before, with ININ taking up the task to publish Suzuki’s Apple Arcade game “Air Twister” on PC and console platforms towards the end of last year. Notably, around the same period, ININ showed interest in working on the “Shenmue” series if given the opportunity. So, this recent collaboration might not be unexpected for fans of the series.
After our successful partnership on Air Twister, ININ Games and YS NET are set to strengthen their bond. Renowned for their dedication to preserving cherished games, ININ Games is thrilled to guide Shenmue III through its next stage. This collaboration signifies the start of a fresh chapter for Shenmue III, with ININ Games collaborating closely with YS NET to maintain the series’ legacy and make it accessible to fans worldwide.
Fans are eagerly awaiting some definite updates about Shenmue from ININ and YS NET, as the future of the series has been clouded with uncertainty following the release of Shenmue 3 and the cancellation of its anime adaptation. Any news that suggests activity in development is certainly welcome.
