- Inin Games hints at ushering Shenmue 3 into a new phase.
- This change may pave the way for future Shenmue games.
As a gamer who vividly remembers the days of playing Shenmue on my trusty old Dreamcast, this news brings a wave of nostalgia. The transfer of ownership from Deep Silver to Inin Games feels like another chapter unfolding in the long-running saga that is the Shenmue franchise. With Yu Suzuki’s indie studio, YS Net, involved, I have high hopes that we might see more of Ryo Hazuki’s journey in the future.
2019 saw the launch of Shenmue 3 on consoles and PCs, rekindling the series after a period of silence from the brand. Is there a possibility of more Shenmue content for fans down the line? At this moment, we can’t say for sure, but the change in ownership for Shenmue 3 seems to suggest that it might be on the horizon.
YS Net, the independent game studio established by Yu Suzuki, the mastermind behind the Shenmue series, announced a significant change. As per the statement, the publishing rights for Shenmue 3 are set to be transferred from Deep Silver to Inin Games.
Shenmue 3’s New Publishing Partner Is Sheperding It Into Its “Next Phase”
The press release does hold an interesting line, as it mentions how Inin Games is “excited” to shepherd Shenmue 3 “into its next phase.”
Is it possible that we might see additional content for Shenmue 3 or maybe a release of the game on additional platforms? Although no official announcements have been made yet, this development could potentially set the stage for more Shenmue games in the future, which Yu Suzuki has expressed interest in creating.
In my gaming days, Shenmue might not seem like a massive phenomenon today with all these open-world games around, but let me tell you, it was quite the sensation when it dropped on SEGA’s Dreamcast back in ’99. I still remember those stunning visuals that left me awestruck, and to think, Shenmue is often given credit as the pioneer of open-world city games, since Grand Theft Auto 3 didn’t roll out until 2001.
Speaking of Shenmue 3, it continues the storyline that began with Shenmue 2, a game initially released on Dreamcast back in September 2001. After SEGA stopped producing console hardware, the series was essentially put on hold for nearly 15 years. However, in June 2015, Yu Suzuki revealed plans to develop a new installment at E3.
Three years after the launch of the second installment, the third part of the series was unveiled in November 2019. It garnered mostly positive feedback, although our review pointed out its dated design elements while acknowledging its appeal and serving as a fulfillment of Yu Suzuki’s promise to Shenmue fans.
As a dedicated fan, could it be that we’ll witness more of the Shenmue universe unfold? While I can’t predict the future, what I do know is that the franchise has been revitalized and is back in action!
