Shigeru Miyamoto Still Tests Each Super Mario Title For The Mario Factor

Shigeru Miyamoto is practically synonymous with Super Mario and Nintendo. For decades, he’s been a leading figure at the company, and he continues to play a major role in shaping the Super Mario games we know and love.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, recently spoke with Casa Brutus magazine about his current role in the franchise. He explained that over time, his role has evolved, and he now works with a team who help maintain the Mario universe. This allows him to be less directly involved in day-to-day game development, though he remains deeply invested in the series’ direction and still contributes directly to its creation. He emphasized that he’s far from detached from the process.

I always start by playing the first half-hour of a game and carefully checking how it feels to control – I want to be sure it captures the familiar Mario experience.

It’s really heartwarming to picture Miyamoto genuinely enjoying the first part of our new game. Of course, the development process is very thorough, and he’d likely offer constructive criticism, but that’s the ideal scenario. It’s hard to put into words what makes a Mario game special, but if anyone knows, it’s him.

Mario is Nintendo’s most popular character, and managing his brand has become increasingly complex. Shigeru Miyamoto also explained that Mario’s growth extends beyond Nintendo itself, with dedicated partners helping to bring Mario to life in theme parks and films.

Mario Mayhem For Every Medium

Like many fans, I’m really excited to see what Nintendo does with Mario next. We don’t know if the next big 3D Mario game will continue the story of Super Mario Odyssey or start something completely new, but I suspect it will be a fresh start. The series hasn’t often relied on direct numbered sequels lately, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 being a notable exception – and it’s great that both Galaxy games are now available together.

Another Super Mario movie is in the works, and it’s called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. While it’s expected to be filled with nods to classic games for dedicated fans, details are currently scarce. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, hasn’t shared much beyond the title and the fact that the movie will take place in space, as reported by VGC.

The Super Mario series remains incredibly popular, recently celebrating its 40th anniversary in September 2025. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, will continue to be involved in the character’s development and hopes to remain healthy enough to see Mario reach his 50th anniversary.
