In Anno 117: Pax Romana, you’ll quickly find that space on your starting island is limited. Eventually, you’ll need to expand to a new island by building ships. These ships aren’t just for exploration; they also help defend against enemy attacks. However, you’ll also need to build up your own army to protect your settlements. Here’s a guide on how to construct ships and recruit troops in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
How To Build Ships In Anno 117 Pax Romana
In Anno 117: Pax Romana, you’ll need to construct a Shipyard to build ships. You can find it within the Harbour Building section. This option isn’t immediately available when you start the game; you’ll need to meet certain requirements first, which usually involve progressing in the game or achieving specific milestones.
- The city must have enough Plebeians or tier two residents.
- The city needs to reach a certain City Status level.
Players can construct three different types of ships. The simplest is the Penteconter, which allows for three upgrades. To build larger ships, players need to unlock the necessary technology. The Trireme is the next step up, and the Quinquireme is the most powerful ship available.
- Penteconter has three module slots, two of which can be occupied by a Ship Archer and a Ship Oar.
- Trireme has five slots, and three of them can be modified. The other two are stuck as a cargo slot. You can add two Ship Archers, one Ship Mast, or one Ship Oar.
These modifications can be adjusted accordingly. Here’s an overview of the modifications:
| Module | What Is It For? |
|---|---|
| Ship Archers | For ship-to-ship combat. |
| Ship Mast | Increases maximum speed when sailing. |
| Ship Oars | Increases maneuverability and reduces reliance on wind, but increases workforce cost. |
Once players have established Rope and Sail production, they’ll be able to design and build their own ships. The game starts with a standard ship design, but governors can customize it to their liking. Keep in mind that these changes are permanent, so plan carefully and only modify the ship based on what you actually need.
You can view all of your ships – including their condition and where they are – by tapping the boat icon at the bottom of the screen.
How To Recruit Troops In Anno 117 Pax Romana
Once I unlocked the Barracks, I could finally start building my army! At first, I was limited to recruiting Auxilia and Archers, but it was a great start.
More army types can be discovered through research.
Just like checking on your ships, you can view your troops by tapping the “Land Troop” button located at the bottom of the screen.
How To Combat In Anno 117 Pax Romana
Choosing all of your soldiers creates an army, and choosing all of your ships creates a fleet. This lets you move them together as a single group.
To attack, select your troops or ship, then right-click (on a computer) on the enemy you want to target. If they’re moving, you can pause the game to make aiming easier.
If you don’t want to command them manually, there’s also an Auto Combat button you can utilize.
Alternatively, you can change the soldier’s stance between three available stances:
- Aggressive
- Disciplined
- Evasive
During battles, watch out for Archer Towers – they can deal a lot of damage to your troops. At the same time, these towers are great for defending your own base.
