Krafton Montreal recently announced Project Windless, a new action RPG coming to PlayStation 5. The game was revealed at the February 12 State of Play presentation, which also showcased upcoming titles like a new John Wick game and a remake of the original God of War trilogy. However, Project Windless quickly became the most talked-about game because players will be able to control a massive, bird-like creature.
PlayStation’s recent showcase started strong with the surprise announcement of a sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits. They followed that up with several exciting reveals, including a co-op mode for Ghost of Yotei, a PC release of Death Stranding 2, and a fresh look at Resident Evil Requiem, which is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC later this month. The presentation also included some unexpected surprises, like a John Wick game developed by Saber Interactive (the team behind Space Marine 2), and a brand new open-world action RPG from Krafton Montreal.
Krafton Unveils Project Windless During February State of Play
During February’s State of Play event, Krafton Montreal unveiled Project Windless, a large-scale, open-world action RPG. The game is set in a fantasy world inspired by the popular 2003 Korean novel series, The Bird That Drinks Tears, which features four distinct races: the Rekons (bird-like humanoids), humans, Tokkebi (creatures who control fire), and the Nhaga (reptilian beings). Instead of directly adapting the novel, Project Windless is set thousands of years before the story begins, focusing on a pivotal moment only hinted at in the original books.
As you might have seen in the trailer, Project Windless centers around the Rekon, a race of powerful, large, bird-like warriors. According to Krafton, the Rekon’s strength, speed, and size are ideal for the game’s core combat, which involves facing off against multiple enemies. But they’re more than just strong; the Rekon are also complex individuals with unique personalities, vulnerabilities, and even a fear of water. The creative director explained in a blog post that these traits make the protagonist feel more realistic and relatable, as they aren’t portrayed as unbeatable.
Beyond the impressive Rekons, Krafton’s new game offers a truly massive and chaotic combat experience. Players will face off against huge numbers of enemies – often dozens, even hundreds – all moving and reacting realistically. These aren’t just static obstacles; advanced technology brings them to life, allowing them to flank, surround, and respond to your every move, creating unpredictable and exciting battles. Success will depend on quickly assessing the situation and adapting your strategy.
We don’t have a release date for Project Windless yet, and it’s unclear if it will be available on any platforms besides PlayStation 5. Krafton is also working on Subnautica 2, but its development has been complicated by recent events. After the co-founders of Unknown Worlds were unexpectedly let go on July 2, 2025, a lawsuit between Unknown Worlds and Krafton caused the game’s release to be pushed from 2025 to 2026. Still, the studio hasn’t announced a specific release date for Subnautica 2.
