At SXSW 2025, Kojima Productions and PlayStation Studios unveiled an exhilarating, ten-minute long trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, brimming with fresh gameplay footage and narrative segments. The trailer featured recurring appearances of Dollman, although some instances were so cryptic it was challenging to distinguish him from other characters. For example, at approximately the 2 minute and 10 second mark, viewers witness Fragile cradling a doll over what seems to be a deceased human body beside a lake. Then, at 6 minutes and 9 seconds, a figure is depicted shining a flashlight on a BT, with a child standing nearby. Remarkably, the man resembling the flashlight-wielding character bears a striking similarity to Fatih Akin, the real person who inspired Dollman’s likeness.

In case you’re not familiar, Fatih Akin is a renowned film director of Turkish and German descent, recognized for his works such as “In the Fade” and “Head-On,” primarily in German cinema. He joins other notable figures like George Miller, creator of Mad Max, and Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive, in the world of Death Stranding. Interestingly, while the character Dollman is designed to resemble Fatih Akin, it’s American actor Jonathan Roumie who provides his voice within the game. You might recognize Roumie from his portrayal of Jesus in The Chosen.

However, for reasons yet unknown, he lost his abilities, and eventually, his soul, or ‘ka,’ became confined within a puppet. Although it appears his physical body is gone, Dollman’s soul continues to exist in this new form.

In the universe of Death Stranding, the terms ‘ka’ and ‘ha’ stand for a character’s spirit and physical form, respectively. Interestingly, these terms mirror how ancient Egyptians described the sensation of a soul departing from a person following death in reality.
