Following the unexpected triumph of Helldivers 2 in early 2024, Sony President Hiroki Totoki announced in February that they had significant projects underway but wouldn’t launch any new installments of their existing first-party franchises until the following fiscal year, starting in March 2025. Despite announcing Ghost of Yotei last year, Sony kept its promise and didn’t release any more titles from established first-party series during that period.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been missing out on fresh installments from PlayStation’s first-party franchises since February 2024. The only exception was “Concord,” which unfortunately didn’t last long past its August debut. However, the drought might be easing with two upcoming releases on the horizon. But if the rumored release date for “Ghost of Yotei” turns out to be accurate, it could leave another significant void in Sony’s lineup once again.
PlayStation’s 2025 Release Slate Could Have a Big Gap to Fill
Death Stranding 2 Marks The Start of PlayStation’s 2025 First-Party Slate
After recently announcing its release date, “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” is scheduled to debut on June 26, 2025. This will be the initial PlayStation first-party title since “Concord,” and the first fresh installment of an existing series since “Helldivers 2.” At this point in time, “Death Stranding 2” is the only confirmed PlayStation first-party game with a set launch date.
Ghost of Yotei Could Come Soon After
If the latest whispers are true, then it appears that the Ghost of Yotei might make its appearance in Death Stranding 2 earlier than some fans had anticipated. Just a few days ago, DetectiveSeeds shared on Twitter that they’d received potential launch dates for Ghost of Yotei from two separate sources. One source, who has a history of missing the mark, suggested a mid to late August release, while another, known for their accuracy in the past, indicated a mid to late July launch instead.
DetectiveSeeds suggested that the actual release date for Ghost of Yotei might fall somewhere around mid-July to mid-August.
The Rest of PlayStation’s Year Is Currently Unclear
Following “The Ghost of Yotei”, no other first-party game for PlayStation has been officially announced with a 2025 release window. Consequently, if the rumored launch date for “Ghost of Yotei” becomes reality, Sony may need to find games to fill approximately four months in their 2025 schedule.
There’s a chance that one of the PlayStation games currently in production without a confirmed launch date might come out before the end of this year. Among the top possibilities are Marvel’s Wolverine and Bungie’s Marathon. However, it appears that Fairgames has been pushed back internally and is now scheduled for a 2026 release. As for Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, industry expert Jason Schreier indicates that it’s still at least two years away.
There’s a chance a new PlayStation game from the God of War franchise could pop up unexpectedly to fill any potential gaps in our gaming calendar this year. There have been various whispers and hints about this series in recent times, with some speculating an Egypt-themed game might be brewing, others predicting a spinoff focused on Atreus could still be on the cards, and the latest murmurs point towards a new Greek saga game being developed. However, none of these projects have been verified by Santa Monica or Sony yet. It’s possible (though not very probable) that one of these games might be officially announced and launched by the end of 2025.
