The anime adaptation of “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations” is generally well-liked, but it’s criticized for having too much extra or non-canon content known as filler. Even though the narrative is engaging and full of action, the creators of “Boruto” had to produce original episodes to let the manga continue advancing, similar to what other series have experienced in the past.
In the near future, Boruto will resume its anime run, yet some viewers express a desire for a reboot instead of a sequel. However, is it reasonable to expect a reboot for this series, or are these fan sentiments overstated?

Boruto is about to come back on screen with the next installment of the anime, but some viewers long for a reboot rather than a sequel. But is it feasible to reboot this series, or are these fans expressing overzealous expectations?
Boruto Anime Adaptation Has Too Many Fillers
Ever since I’ve been following Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (Boruto: NNG), I’ve noticed that, much like many long-running anime series, it needed to create additional episodes when it reached the same point as the manga. Given that the Boruto: NNG manga has a consistent monthly release schedule, the anime would often overtake it, moving at a pace even faster than Naruto did.
To tackle this issue, the team behind the anime frequently opted to adapt other Naruto-related content rather than producing numerous filler arcs. For instance, many novels have been transformed into Boruto episodes. However, the anime moved ahead at a quicker pace compared to the manga, eventually exhausting its source material and resorting to original episodes and storylines.
To put it simply, not all filler content should be dismissed outright. For instance, the anime series Boruto has produced some engaging and emotional filler arcs, like the Time Slip Arc. In this storyline, Boruto Uzumaki travels back in time and encounters Naruto Uzumaki and others during their childhood, which coincides with the era depicted in the original Naruto series. This arc was a part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary festivities and brought joy to many fans.
Often, the manga and the filler content in the anime may not align, causing complications for the production team. To illustrate, Sarada Uchiha becomes a chunin in the anime, but she remains a genin in the manga. This discrepancy is significant in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex (TBV). Should there be an adaptation of Boruto TBV, this inconsistency can be addressed easily. However, it might confuse fans who only follow the anime. Given these complications, some fans suggest a reboot for the entire Boruto series to avoid such confusion.
The Problems of Rebooting Boruto
From a narrative standpoint, it seems like restarting the storyline of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (NGG) might offer the best opportunity to move forward. However, economically speaking, initiating a reboot could potentially not be beneficial since the series is still fresh and there’s a lot more to adapt from the original manga. Fans are eagerly awaiting new episodes rather than a reboot, as they feel that the TV series has already moved away from the Naruto: Boruto movie. Furthermore, because of these differences, some fans might perceive another reboot as unnecessary at this time.
Instead of focusing on readaptation yet, it seems wiser to complete the adaption of NGG first and move on to TBV. Meanwhile, viewers might choose to perceive the anime as an alternate storyline compared to the manga, or just dismiss the filler episodes for now.
A Naruto Reboot Should Come First
Just like Boruto, Naruto also has a significant amount of filler episodes. If either series were to be remade, it would make more sense to reboot Naruto without the fillers initially, before moving on to a filler-free version of Boruto. However, adapting Two Blue Vortex without fillers could cause confusion among fans who have only watched the anime and aren’t familiar with the original manga, as some events may not align. But keeping things as they are seems to be the best course of action in this case.
What’s Happening in Boruto Two Blue Vortex Now?
Currently, Boruto Uzumaki and Jura, the head of Shinju clones, are engaged in an exhilarating battle. While fans anticipate Boruto unveiling a powerful new move shortly, at present, it appears he’s struggling to maintain his advantage. Post the Human God Trees arc, the narrative is likely to focus on Code, Kawaki, and the Otsutsuki clan once more.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is available on MANGA Plus, in English and many other languages.
