As a die-hard fan of Dexter who has followed the blood-splattered journey of our favorite serial killer since its inception, I can confidently say that the return of this captivating series with Dexter: Original Sin is like a long-awaited reunion with an old friend. Having binged the first episode, I must admit that it brought back all the nostalgic thrills and chills that made me fall in love with the show in the first place.
Warning! This article contains spoilers from Dexter: Original Sin Episode 1.
Summary
- Fans finally got confirmation that present-day Dexter survived a gunshot to the chest.
- Dexter: Original Sin hints at the setup for Resurrection but offers intriguing potential.
- Original Sin’s success could lead to multiple seasons exploring Dexter’s backstory.
This week, Dexter: Original Sin debuted simultaneously on Paramount+ and Showtime, and viewers were relieved to learn that the current-day character of Dexter Morgan survived a gunshot wound to his chest. The narrative then shifted to 1991, where we saw young Dexter preparing for his inaugural kill before starting his internship at Miami Metro Homicide. With Original Sin laying the groundwork for Michael C. Hall’s comeback in the upcoming series, Resurrection, there is an abundance of intrigue yet to be unfolded as we delve deeper into Dexter’s past history.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether the prequel series will get a second season, given that the first episode of “Dexter: Original Sin” has only recently been aired. It seems premature to make such a decision. I truly hope that the storyline won’t end with just one season and instead develop into a longer-running series. Patrick Gibson delivered a captivating portrayal of the serial killer character, and the supporting cast appears promising. Fingers crossed for a more expansive and developed series!
Original Sin Has The Potential To Be So Much More Than A Set-Up For Resurrection

Following the broadcast of Dexter: Original Sin, a brief teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel titled Resurrection was revealed by Paramount+ in collaboration with Showtime. The sequel is scheduled to premiere in summer 2025. The Dexter universe has grown significantly since the 2021 limited series Dexter: New Blood achieved unprecedented success for Showtime. However, it remains uncertain whether the Dexter prequel series serves solely to pave the way for the sequel, particularly as Michael C. Hall narrates his life in a voiceover while recovering from a gunshot wound in the prequel. The character’s ‘resurrection’ might mark the end of Hall’s voiceover in the prequel and potentially the conclusion of exploring his origin story in Original Sin.

It would be disappointing indeed if the story of Original Sin doesn’t continue, given its captivating initial setup. Michael C. Hall suggested last August that Resurrection might span several seasons, but there’s no word yet on whether Original Sin will follow suit. The terms of Patrick Dempsey’s contract on Original Sin seem to imply it could be a single-season project. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in September, he mentioned:
For now, I’ve committed myself for a year, but life can be unpredictable. I truly enjoy being part of this show, but unexpected circumstances may arise.
It’s not automatically implied that Original Sin leads to Resurrection, since it’s typical for actors on a fresh series to receive yearly contract renewals, one at a time. Furthermore, even if Dempsey’s character, Aaron Spencer (the Miami Metro chief), may not continue beyond the first season, it doesn’t necessarily mean the show will be canceled altogether.
Original Sin Is Bound To Be A Huge Success, So Another Season Is Very Likely
Following the controversial ending of Dexter’s story in New Blood, showrunner Clyde Phillips has clearly grasped the consequences of attempting an early conclusion. To everyone’s surprise, the limited series turned out to be Showtime’s most successful production ever. The decision to retract New Blood’s finale emerged after Paramount merged with Showtime, insisting on a sequel and a prequel in the Dexter universe. Consequently, Phillips and his team have been brainstorming ways to keep Dexter alive for the sequel series, which they decided to intertwine with the prequel series, Original Sin.

If Original Sin turns out to be a success on the streaming platform, just as anticipated, there will likely be enthusiasm for extending the prequel series into several seasons, much like how Resurrection has been planned out. With Dexter’s backstory offering many intriguing directions to delve into, it wouldn’t seem like an attempt to merely boost profits at Paramount. If both fans and the creative team can continue delivering top-notch stories, a second season of Original Sin would be a logical choice.
