Should Far Cry Get Its Own Version of Assassin’s Creed Infinity?

For more than two decades, the popular “Far Cry” series from Ubisoft has consistently delivered new games almost every year. Lately though, this series seems to be taking a break, with the last major “Far Cry” release, “Far Cry 6”, coming out in 2021, which is about four years ago now. This marks the longest gap between releases for the franchise that Ubisoft has ever had. Although Ubisoft has been updating some of the older “Far Cry” games to run at a faster frame rate, they haven’t said much about the future direction of the series as a whole.

Some enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating that the prolonged absence of the Far Cry series will provide Ubisoft with a chance to revisit their designs and breathe new life into the franchise. While Far Cry 6 was well-received, it didn’t quite resonate with the die-hard Far Cry fanbase. Many players, along with critics and media professionals, felt that the game leaned too heavily on its predecessors, lacking innovation and originality. If rumors are true, the next installment of Far Cry is expected to deviate substantially from the series’ traditional format, suggesting that this feedback might be influencing their decisions.

Far Cry 7 Doesn’t Really Need an Animus Hub

Far Cry 7 is Apparently Going to Take Some Inspiration from Assassin’s Creed Infinity

Following the launch of Far Cry 6 in 2021, rumors circulated suggesting that the next main installment in the Far Cry series, tentatively named Far Cry 7, would adopt a live service model, similar to Assassin’s Creed Infinity at the time. This idea sparked immediate criticism from fans. Nevertheless, later reports indicated that the franchise might not be adopting this approach as initially speculated. As per Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is presently working on two distinct Far Cry games: one is a multiplayer extraction shooter set in the Alaskan wilderness, while the other is a single-player game with a Dead Rising-style time limit.

Initially, both the multiplayer extraction mode in Far Cry and the standalone Far Cry player version originated from a single game. However, as their objectives expanded, they evolved into distinct projects.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity – A.K.A. The Animus Hub – is a Special Interface That Connects the Latest AC Games

Despite the upcoming mainline “Far Cry” game being reportedly single-player, there’s a chance Ubisoft might incorporate an element similar to the “Assassin’s Creed Infinity” concept into it, as hinted in last year’s report. For those who are not familiar, “Assassin’s Creed Infinity” is a code name for the “Animus Hub”, introduced with 2025’s “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”. The Animus Hub serves as a central platform to access recent games within the “AC” series. Players can engage in additional missions, uncover Modern Day content, obtain rare items, and more through this interface.

Introducing an Animus Hub-like feature into Far Cry 7 could have its merits, but it might not be essential. Ubisoft designed the Animus Hub as a means to interconnect the Assassin’s Creed games, not only for convenience of access, but also for story coherence. The Animus Hub offers a timeline displaying the protagonists from every contemporary AC game and their respective positions within the series’ broader narrative. Although each Assassin’s Creed game usually features distinct characters, their stories often intertwine to some degree.

The Far Cry Games Are Not As Connected As the AC Games Are

Compared to the Assassin’s Creed games, the Far Cry series doesn’t have as much narrative interconnectivity. Each game in the Far Cry franchise (except for Far Cry: New Dawn) is a self-contained story, with only a few recurring characters and minimal links between them. Consequently, it wouldn’t be logical to introduce an Animus Hub specifically for Far Cry 7, even though there are many aspects that future Far Cry games could improve upon; an additional interface might not be one of them.
