During the campaign, after establishing the town of Juliana, the Emperor will visit. This raises a curious question for players: should you bring sardines as a gift, or simply present yourself?

Basically, it’s best to go to the imperial invitation without the sardines – just you will do. Bringing them doesn’t change the story at all, except the Empress will mention the smell, and you’ll lose one of your sardines.

Once you’ve decided whether to accept the imperial invitation, you need to wait for the imperial boat to arrive. You’ll see a purple circle on the map indicating its location when it docks. There’s no time limit to attend the invitation, so you can go whenever you’re ready, but accepting it is necessary to continue the story.

When you’re ready, find the fancy boat on your dock and click it to start the quest. Select the option to board, and you’ll be taken to the Emperor. Whether you have a Sardine or not, the Emperor will give you a gift to help you on your journey through Latium.

Bringing sardines to the meal with the Emperor and Empress will trigger a hint that they have a strong, revitalizing scent. Once you arrive at the palace, Empress Julia will notice the smell and react differently depending on which character you are playing as in Anno 117: Pax Romana.

If you’re playing as Marcus, he’ll just laugh and tell someone to take the sardines to the kitchen. But if you’re playing as Marcia, she’ll worry, believing the governor’s wife is being treated badly in Juliana.

If you attend the imperial invitation alone, Empress Julia won’t react at all. Your character will just offer a quick apology for forgetting a gift, and then the story will continue as usual. Don’t worry – there will be no penalties for arriving empty-handed.
