In The Outer Worlds 2, Inez’s companion quest, ‘A Most Extraordinary Specimen,’ sends you to a secret laboratory on Cloister. You’ll discover it was used for unsettling experiments on patients. The quest begins when a friend of Inez asks for your help. Once inside, you’ll meet Doctor Giles Rasmussen, who claims his experiments, though extreme, were for the greater good and necessary for progress. This leaves you with a difficult choice: should you kill Doctor Rasmussen, or let him continue his work at Ethel’s Lab? Here’s a breakdown to help you decide.

What Happens if You Kill Doctor Rasmussen in The Outer Worlds 2?

Once you’ve listened to the Doctor, you’ll have a choice: allow Inez to avenge her friend by killing him. If you allow her to act on her feelings and carry out the revenge, here’s what will happen:

  • Mechanical Augmentation

As a big Inez fan, I was excited to get her an upgrade! The Mechanical Augmentation does let her use her power more, which is cool. But honestly? It’s probably the least helpful of the three options you get from this quest. I was hoping for something a little more impactful!

You can also take the keycard from his body, which will unlock previously inaccessible areas of the lab.

Inez will feel satisfied having gotten her revenge on Trooper Ortiz, but that will likely be the conclusion of this whole mess. After that, you’ll need to go back to Ethel’s lab on Paradise Island to install the implant you selected for Inez, which will finish the quest.

What Happens if You Spare Doctor Rasmussen in The Outer Worlds 2?

Just to clarify, you don’t actually need a Speech skill of 17 or higher to save Doctor Rasmussen and achieve this result, despite what you might have heard elsewhere. All you need to do is choose the correct dialogue options during your conversation with Rasmussen and Inez at the lab. Here’s how:

  • Nice try. We found records that prove he underwent surgery here. (Make sure you’ve checked the terminal in the room with the body in the tank in the lab to get this dialogue option).
  • What were you trying to do with Ortiz and the others?
  • Got any proof of that?
  • Enough about you. Show me one good thing you’ve done for other people.
  • Do you have a graft that could help Inez?
  • This could be your way to prove yourself. Let’s at least hear him out.
  • His research could help so many others. The good might just outweigh the bad.
  • This is a personal choice, Inez. I’ll stand by whatever you decide.

If you don’t stick to the correct conversation choices, Inez might kill the doctor. Otherwise, you can ensure the doctor’s safety by succeeding at a difficult Speech skill check during the last conversation option.

If you decide to spare Doctor Rasmussen and persuade Inez he should live, he’ll be grateful for your kindness and will immediately give you this:

  • Ursopod Grafting Part
  • Mantiqueen Grafting Part

After that, head back to Ethel’s Lab on Paradise Island. Once there, you’ll need to choose one of two grafts to give to Inez. Don’t worry about making the ‘right’ choice – just pick the one that feels best for how you like to play.

Using the Urospod graft reduces the damage you take when the ability is active. The Mantiqueen graft, on the other hand, creates a Mantiswam hive that Inez can deploy against groups of enemies, making it ideal for controlling large crowds.

Ethel will tell you she always opposed the terrible things happening in the lab. She recently had a private meeting with Willard Konnen, the VP of Experimental Operations at Auntie’s Choice, and will give you her keycard. You can then go speak with him at Head Office Tower on the ACS grounds if you choose.

Go talk to Konnen. He’ll give you a new quest that involves getting a mission briefing in Praetor for ‘Half-Truths in Advertising’.

Even though Inez is determined to get back at Ortiz, you’ll have a better outcome if you persuade her to let Rasmussen live and work with Ethel Tinsley on the research. This leads to the best possible ending for this task and also unlocks the opportunity to acquire a grafting component.
