As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially hesitant about the new movement input system in Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2). After all, the click-to-move method has been my trusty companion since the dawn of ARPGs. However, as I delved into Wraeclast once again, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the addition of the WASD movement option.
In the sequel to Path of Exile, fans can embark on a completely new journey through Wraeclast, featuring significantly enhanced graphics, a revamped end-game experience, and numerous quality-of-life improvements designed to make this new adventure feel exhilarating and refreshingly different.
As a gamer diving into Path of Exile 2, I’ve noticed one standout change that sets it apart from the first game – the introduction of an FPS-like control scheme for character movement! Now, instead of the traditional method, I can use WASD keys to navigate. This is quite a shift from the original game, and it’s up to us players to decide which method suits us best. The choice between the two input options is presented right at the start of the campaign, but if you’re unsure about how to switch later on, here’s a helpful tip: simply adjust your controls settings to toggle between the movement methods!
How To Switch Between WASD and Left-Click Movement Inputs in PoE 2
In the game Path of Exile 2, players have the flexibility to alternate between using WASD keys and Left-Click on the mouse while progressing through a campaign. This can be done by simply:
- Exit to the main menu, either the character selection screen or the Login screen. This setting cannot be changed while you are inside an instance; you have to exit for the switch to happen.
- Open ‘Options’. On the character selection screen, it’s the icon on the top left.
- Click on the ‘Input’ tab from the top menu.
- Expand the drop-down for ‘Input Method’ and select ‘Mouse & Keyboard’ for Left-Click to move or ‘WASD’ for the other option.
- Click ‘Save,’ and then ‘Close.’
Now, all your characters will move using the input method you selected.
Should You Use WASD or Left-Click To Move In PoE 2
Players who have previously experienced “Path of Exile 1” will likely find comfort in the traditional click-to-move system carried over from the first game. However, for those embarking on “Path of Exile 2”, the developers at GGG have introduced a new movement option using the WASD keys. This style might be different from what players familiar with older ARPGs are accustomed to, but it works effectively when used correctly, a situation that fortunately applies to “PoE 2”.
Frequently using the Left-Click to navigate has been a common practice, but there’s no harm in changing it up if you’re willing to adapt. While the game doesn’t punish players for sticking with the old method, learning WASD controls could be more intuitive and become second nature after an initial adjustment period.
In truth, using the keys W, A, S, D (WASD) for movement in PoE 2 is generally more effective than using the Left-Click for this purpose. This is particularly beneficial for characters who use ranged skills or abilities, such as Sorceresses and Mercenaries. With WASD, players can maneuver their character backward while simultaneously using their mouse to target enemies they are fleeing from. Given that PoE 2 is significantly more challenging than its predecessor, featuring combat reminiscent of Soulslike games that demands continuous dodging, aggro management, and retreating from large groups of adversaries, players will frequently need to disengage. Though it’s feasible to shoot back while retreating with the Left-Click, WASD provides a more effortless and swift solution. Players of Path of Exile 2 are encouraged to experiment with WASD for a few minutes to see if they prefer it; however, they are always free to revert to their previous method if needed.
