Shuhei Yoshida: Choice Was To Lead Indies Or Leave PlayStation

either take the helm of the new independent games initiative or depart from PlayStation altogether.

In his recent conversation with VentureBeat, Yoshida expressed enthusiasm for the sole opportunity ahead, despite its limited nature.

Speaking of shifting from first-party games to independent studios, Yoshida explained, “It wasn’t a matter of preference; it was more about necessity.” When Ryan [Jim] proposed the role in indie development, my options were either to accept it or part ways with the company.

I had a strong passion regarding the condition of PlayStation and independent games. I genuinely desired to contribute to this cause. I truly believed I could bring something distinctive to the table.

Yoshida expressed that transitioning from working on first-party games to focusing on independent developers presented a greater hurdle for him compared to his decision to depart from the company this year, after 31 years of service. He mentioned feeling fortunate that the indie community believed he could contribute significantly to their success on PlayStation.

He mentioned that he now serves as an advisor for certain companies. He’s still collaborating with some indie publishers and developers he admires. Moving from Sony to being an independent advisor seems more like a shift within the industry, rather than leaving a first-party position.

After that comment, Yoshida expressed his intention to still collaborate with independent game developers, even though he’s no longer associated with PlayStation. He shared his affection for working with young, gifted creators who consistently produce outstanding games each year.

Year after year, attending these events, I’m always thrilled to see a few independent games among the Game of the Year nominees. They’re adding a fresh, exhilarating vibe to the gaming industry, and that’s just what makes it so enjoyable. If I could, my ultimate goal would be to contribute to their success in some way.
