Shuhei Yoshida Is Leaving PlayStation in January

As a gamer who has grown up with the PlayStation family, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and gratitude towards Shuhei Yoshida. For over three decades, he has been an integral part of my gaming journey, from the early days of the original PlayStation to the current generation of consoles. His departure feels like saying goodbye to an old friend who’s moving away.

On January 15th, 2025, Shuhei Yoshida, a long-serving PlayStation professional, will bid farewell to the company after more than three decades with Sony. Since the initial launch of PlayStation in 1993, Yoshida has been an integral part of the PlayStation family. He held the position of President for SIE Worldwide Studios from 2008 until 2019.

Today, Yoshida shared the news on the official PlayStation blog, in a post titled “A Fond Farewell: Reflecting on Shuhei Yoshida’s 31 Years with PlayStation.

When asked why he’s leaving the company, here is his response.

I’ve been part of the PlayStation family since its inception, and now I’m celebrating my 31st year here. As I approach my 30th anniversary, I find myself contemplating a change. The company is thriving, the PS5 is fantastic, and the games on this platform are outstanding. I’m also impressed by the new leadership who I respect and admire. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for PlayStation!

So you know, PlayStation is in really good hands. I thought, okay, this is my time.

2019 saw Yoshida relinquish his position as president of SIE, instead establishing an initiative aimed at fostering external, self-governing creators. In a statement, Jim Ryan, who was then the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed that these extraordinary creative endeavors merit attention and have Shu from PlayStation as their advocate. He emphasized that it’s crucial for the entire SIE team to collaborate more closely with independent developers, fostering a culture that appreciates and highlights their impact on PlayStation platforms.

Shuhei has been cherished as a symbol within the PlayStation community. A moment that truly solidified his iconic status occurred during E3 2013, when Microsoft was facing criticism over potential limitations on used games on their newly launched Xbox One console. He shared the stage with Adam Boys, who was Vice President of Publisher and Developer Relations at Sony at the time, as they discussed the freedom to share used games for the PlayStation 4.

Yoshida jokes about the big news, comparing it to announcing the release date of an anticipated game. “It’s like announcing the launch date of a new game, [something] I haven’t done for a long time [laughs].”
