For quite some time now, we haven’t had much new content from popular PlayStation game series that fans love. This is largely due to the shutdown of Japan Studio in 2021 and Shuhei Yoshida stepping down as the head of SIE Worldwide Studios.
Sony is devoted to crafting high-octane, major box-office style games for PlayStation users. Illustrations of this methodology include God of War, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima (and Ghost of Yotei), The Last of Us, Spider-Man, and Returnal. This translates to a more focused effort away from developing AA (Action-Adventure) games.
The chasm between independent game titles and major gaming powerhouses has grown wider than before, with one factor being the departure of Shuhei Yoshida as President of SIE Worldwide Studios. This move ultimately led to the shutdown of Japan Studio.
Sony PlayStation No Longer Wanted AA Games on PS4 or PS5
In an interview with AV Watch, Yoshida stated: “As leader of the initial team, I was tasked with creating a game potent enough to boost hardware sales. When crafting something like that, the company applied significant pressure. They desired specific elements, and though we had to comply, both the scope of development and the necessary sales targets kept escalating.
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share an insight: The founders of the company were brimming with innovative and captivating ideas, but unfortunately, they didn’t quite fit the AA category. To clarify, shortly after my departure from the presidency, Japan Studio was discontinued – a decision likely driven by PlayStation’s broader corporate restructuring initiatives.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Back then, Japan Studio was renowned for crafting fantastic Action-Adventure games. However, if I were to guess, their style might not align with what the company or first-party is currently seeking.
Japan Studio was renowned for developing some of PlayStation’s most celebrated titles, such as Everyone’s Golf, Ape Escape, LocoRoco, Knack, Patapon, Gravity Rush, and numerous others. Although other studios may take over these franchises—for instance, Bandai Namco with the latest Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots game—some of these games have been relegated to the annals of history.
