The Glimpses of the Past are a brilliant touch, transporting us back to those chilling moments we’ve never forgotten.
The Silent Hill 2 Remake is an incredible entry for the Silent Hill games, packed with fear and secrets to discover. Bloober Team delivered a full, horrifying experience, one that left veteran fans absolutely stunned.
The game offers various types of collectibles for players, including archives, photos, among others. However, one particular collectible, “Glimpses of the Past,” is especially appealing to fans.
Initially, the game doesn’t make it obvious what the Flashbacks from the Past are meant to represent. When players encounter an interactive item, the screen zooms in on the object, accompanied by a gentle melody, but little else happens.
If someone isn’t familiar with a particular object or scene, it may appear ordinary or unclear. However, for those who have knowledge about it, it becomes something unique and interesting.
As a dedicated gamer diving back into the eerie world of Silent Hill 2, I can’t help but feel a thrill when I stumble upon relics from the past – these are the Glimpses of the Past. They carry echoes of the original game, be it a familiar location or an iconic object. Essentially, they’re hidden treasures that serve as nods to our shared gaming history. Yet, they aren’t just casual Easter Eggs; they’re skillfully woven into the gameplay mechanics, offering a delightful blend of nostalgia and immersive gameplay.
10 The Typewriter’s Purple Bull Key

A glance into the past can be discovered at the Brookhaven Hospital, more precisely in the Medical Records area – there you’ll find an old-fashioned typewriter.
Although it appears to be a tribute to the traditional Resident Evil series, it actually alludes to the Louise Box riddle from the original version. In the remake, this puzzle remains as a locked box that requires multiple codes to open and just a single key for access.
Originally, there were two distinct keys required: one was the Lapis Eye Key, which appears in the remake, and the other was the Purple Bull Key, located beside the typewriter.
9 The Horseshoe Puzzle
Horseshoe Hatch, Boar Block of Toluca Prison
In the disquieting confines of Toluca Penitentiary, adventurers will eventually reach the Boar Enclosure, where they may stumble upon another fragment of the Past. This particular artifact is a hatch, painted white and adorned with an old horseshoe atop it.
In the original version of the game, we encounter a situation reminiscent of the Horseshoe Puzzle. The character, James Sunderland, had to improvise a way to open a trapdoor, and he did so by crafting a makeshift handle using a candle, lighter, and a horseshoe in an ingenious manner similar to MacGyver’s problem-solving skills.
Instead of laboriously searching for the solution, as the revamped version merely mentions the puzzle instead of including it again.
8 The Classic Clock Puzzle

The Clock Puzzle, located in Blue Creek Apartments, is one of the first main puzzles players must genuinely think through in the Otherworld.
So far, most things were quite straightforward – the Otherworld hadn’t made its entrance yet.
In the initial version of the game, the Clock Puzzle was found nestled within the Woodside Apartments, and it is alluded to in this Flashback to Yesteryears.
In one of the rooms, there are numerous scratches that aren’t particularly noticeable at first glance. But if players visualize a clock in that specific location, the significance becomes quite apparent.
7 Eddie’s Pizza
Pizza, Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama
Occasionally, anxiety might make someone feel quite hungry, as it appears to be the situation with Eddie, who often indulges in a quick bite. In the initial game, one of those bites could have been pizza.
How he got it to Silent Hill remains a genuine mystery, but it seems to outrage James indescribably. He yells, “This town is full of monsters! How can you sit there and eat pizza?!”
In the remade version, interplay with the pizza box at Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama offers a peek into the past. This interaction rewards players with the “Leftovers” trophy.
James’ statement adds another layer of humor to the situation as well, serving as a witty allusion that lightens up the overall tone. It’s like an amusing joke that momentarily distracts from the grim realities.
6 Pyramid Head’s Improvised Weapon

Traversing the hospital’s rooftops like a nimble gamer, I often stumble upon remnants of the past – this time, it presents itself as a shattered fence.
It’s unusual, considering that the hospital generally appears well-maintained, except for when it transitions into the Otherworld. However, seasoned players swiftly turned to engage a seemingly approaching Pyramid Head – yet, he was nowhere to be seen.
Originally, Pyramid Head hurls James over this barrier, causing him to fall downwards. In the new version of the game, however, he pushes James off the roof, but from a different spot.
In the enigmatic world of Silent Hill, I find myself often questioning how its inhabitants endure such horrors, but then I realize – it’s not about understanding; it’s about surviving and making it out alive.
5 The Fateful Cassette Recorder
Cassette Recorder, Otherworld Hotel Reading Room
The last possible Glimpse of the Past that players can find is in the Reading Room of the Otherworld Hotel. This time, it’s a cassette recorder.
Sadly, unlike in the original version, this item isn’t a significant discovery or game-changer; instead, it’s merely a small collectible.
Back when I was gaming, that hidden recorder held quite a bit of power in shaping the final outcome. You see, if I listened to it all the way through, it significantly impacted the ending I’d eventually encounter. There were multiple endings up for grabs, and the recorder decided my fate.
It would have been pretty neat to listen to something from this cassette recorder, though.
4 The Original Gallows Puzzle
Hanging Rope, Labyrinth Rotten Area
One lesser-known yet challenging aspect of the game, even in its recent remake, is The Gallows Puzzle. It’s a secret many players only discover upon playing. Interestingly, the rope or noose that James interacts with in the promotional trailers is actually part of this very puzzle itself.
In the revamped version, this riddle is situated within the Toluca Penitentiary, after numerous riddles and battles with monsters. It isn’t until players penetrate the putrid sector of the Maze that they discover a frayed, dangling rope.
In this Flashback, you’ll find the Authentic Gallows Puzzle, surrounded by the corroded fences typical of the Otherworld, as well as its grisly reminders.
3 OG Heaven’s Night Entrance

Without a doubt, Maria stands out as one of the crucial figures in the game. Her connection with James and her role as a complex narrative tool add depth to the game, making it clear that the story wouldn’t be fully told without her presence.
As a gamer, when I encountered Maria, she proposed guiding me to a unique spot, weaving our way through her own hangout, the enigmatic haven known as Heaven’s Night.
The Night Club and Bar known as “Heaven” has moved locations in the remake. In the original version, it was a hidden building, nestled somewhere upstairs, offering a Peek into the Past.
With Maria, I came across this building, and she expresses her thoughts about it, initially uncertain about her emotions, eventually suggesting that she feels a sense of familiarity or recurrence.
2 First Encounter
Blocked Tunnel, Nathan Avenue
For the very first time in gameplay, players will stumble upon a glimpse into the past, located nearby Nathan Avenue. This initial peek should instantly feel remarkably familiar to them.
In the remake, it seems like this area is merely cordoned off without significant relevance; however, in the original version, things could not be more different.
At this spot, players initially meet a deceptive character known as the Lying Figure, marking it as the first adversary in the game. It’s also the place where James acquires a makeshift weapon – a Wooden Plank – and the initial confrontation with the enemy commences.
In the remake, this has been transferred inside, yet it’s delightful that the original setting continues to thrive.
1 The First Boss Room

As a nostalgia enthusiast, there’s no denying that the most heart-warming peek into the past can be found nestled on the second floor of the Blue Creek Apartments. In this vintage gaming experience, I find myself engaging with a lifeless figure sprawled on the ground to unveil its secrets.
The very spot where James initially encountered the famous character Pyramid Head in combat for the initial time serves as this stairway’s original location. In both reimagined and original encounters, no bullets need to be exchanged, as players are instead tasked with evading him until the alarm sounds.
This element is instantly familiar, even for those who recall the heart-pounding chase from the initial game. It also serves to cultivate an unsettling anticipation: if this isn’t the battlefield with Pyramid Head, then where and when will the inevitable assault occur?
