Silent Hill 2: Weights and Scales Puzzle Guide

As a seasoned adventurer who’s seen my fair share of puzzling conundrums, I must say this Upper Floor Key business is quite intriguing! First things first, we unlock that door next to the Break Room, then climb those stairs, and voila! The Warden’s Office awaits. A typewriter that repeats “Sick”? Reminds me of my old manual typewriter back home, always getting stuck on the letter ‘i’. Anyways, type in “SICK”, get yourself a Light Weight, and off you go!

In Silent Hill 2, as players delve deeper into the enigmatic bowels of Toluca Prison, they’ll encounter yet another intriguing puzzle essential for advancing through this maze-like penitentiary. The remake of Silent Hill 2 is brimming with captivating puzzles, and the key one for the Toluca Prison segment of the game involves balancing a set of weights on a scale to unlock particular doors.

There are a total of four doors to be opened and 5 weights to be found, and below, players can find the correct order and navigation so that James can discover the weights and free himself from the terrors that lurk in the dark of the Toluca Prison.

Where to Find the Heaviest Weight

Upon entering the main section of Toluca Prison 1F via the Canteen, players should turn left towards the Chapel. In this chapel, they’ll find the Heaviest Weight at the altar, an item they can pick up and carry through to the ominous cell blocks of Block B. Proceed along the corridor of Block B, and you’ll arrive at a pair of double doors that lead to the Yard. Inside this area, players can interact with a veiled statue, uncovering its hidden secrets by pulling off the cloth to reveal a central puzzle within.

How to Open the Headless Serpent Door

In the game, known as the Yard, the main challenge is referred to as the scales conundrum. Players aim to manipulate this puzzle by putting the heaviest weight on the right scale and moving the existing weight to the left scale. This action adjusts the dial to the Headless Serpent symbol. Once accomplished, players can exit the Yard towards Block A, where the door nearest to cell A6 will become unlocked. This opens up access to the Death Row/Toluca Prison 1F Serpent Section.

Where to Find the Medium Weight

Stepping foot into the chilling confines of Death Row on the game’s map, as a gamer, I can’t help but feel a shiver down my spine. The journey ahead involves threading through the area past the padlocked rooms until I stumble upon the ominous Witness Room. Inside this room, there lies a generator puzzle that demands my attention and problem-solving skills to crack its code and progress further in the game.

Once they’ve figured out the generator riddle, players gain access to the now unlocked Death Chamber. Inside this chamber, you’ll find the Medium Weight seated in a chair. Proceed through the freshly opened cells of Block E. At the end of the corridor in Cell E1, break down the wall with your lead pipe to advance to Cell E10. This will bring you to the Witness Checkpoint area and allow you to retrace your steps back to the 1F Main Section while carrying the Medium Weight.

How to Open the Hornless Ox Door

Head back to the weight-balancing challenge in the courtyard with the Medium Weight. Position the medium weight on the right side of the scale, and put the Heaviest Weight and the Starter Weight together on the same right side. This action should shift the pointer towards the Hornless Ox symbol. Players can exit the courtyard and enter via Block A, where they’ll find the Hornless Ox door, located by the staircase next to Cell A1.

Where to Find the Heavy Weight

Upon gaining access to the Toluca Prison’s 2F sector via the Hornless Ox door, gamers should make their way towards Block C and then to the Guardroom. In a desk drawer within the Guardroom, they will discover the key to Block D. Using this key, they can explore Block D and eventually reach Cell D5. It is here where players will find the Shiv Key hidden in the wall.

Using the Shiv Key, players can now unveil Cell C4, leading them to a crawlspace that allows entry into the prison’s intricate pipe network. The goal is for players to navigate through this area, eventually arriving at the Toilets and subsequently the Changing Rooms. Beyond the Changing Rooms lies the expansive Showers area. At the back wall of this room, there will be a hole where James must stretch his arm in three instances to retrieve the Heavy Weight. Once obtained, retrace your steps back to the Yard.

How to Open the Eyeless Boar Door

In the yard now, players must maneuver weights they’ve acquired. The scale to their left should contain the Starter Weight that was in the puzzle room initially, whereas the scale on the right should hold both the Heavy Weight and Medium Weight, as well as the Heaviest Weight. This action will trigger the dial and unlock the Eyeless Boar door, which is situated in the center of Block B, directly across from Cell B3.

Where to Find the Light Weight

By successfully navigating the Eyeless Boar entrance to Toluca Prison’s Administrative Section, gamers should proceed upward through the Visitation Room. There, they will find a window offering an opportunity for James to climb inside. Upon entering, make your way to the Infirmary, where in the rear area, you can discover and collect the Upper Floor Key. This key is essential for unlocking the locked door situated along the corridor adjacent to the Break Room.

Venture through the now accessible door, ascend the staircase leading to the Warden’s Office. Inside, you’ll find a foreboding typewriter that repeatedly displays “Sick”. Interact with this device by typing “SICK” on its keys. Once done, the desk drawer will automatically open, rewarding you with the Light Weight item. Make your way back down the stairs and unlock the shortcut section of 2F to re-enter Block C and Block D, allowing you to return to the Yard with your newfound weight.

How to Open the Wingless Dove Door

Inside the courtyard, it’s now necessary to put all weights on one scale, except for the medium weight which should be placed on the other scale. This arrangement will cause the scale to tilt left and trigger the Wingless Dove symbol. Once players leave the courtyard, they’ll find the Wingless Dove door directly to their left, descending the staircase. This door leads them into the Toluca Prison Basement.

Where to Find the Lightest Weight

Inside the Toluca Prison Basement, players will find themselves in an enclosed area with no escape. Their objective is straightforward: explore the corridors until they come across a crawlspace opposite Cell F15. Enter this narrow passage and when you reach the control panel by the exit door, press the button to open Cell F6.

Return to the Prison Basement and move towards Cell F6. On a piece of fabric, players can grab the Lightest Weight, which is the last weight required for the scales puzzle. Once you’ve picked up the weight, the cell door will automatically lock. To escape, players must wait for the banging to stop by collecting the Confession Memo that’s pinned on the cell wall. Leave Cell F6 and make your way to Cell F9. Here, players can use a lead pipe to smash through a wall and find a ladder in Cell F10 leading to 1F Main Section where it’s time to head back to the Yard.

How to Solve the Final Scale Puzzle

Once players have gathered all six scales’ weights, it’s now time for them to evenly distribute these weights to demonstrate that justice indeed has no favoritism or bias. To facilitate an easier process, I recommend that players return each weight to its respective slot and number them from 1 through 6. For a clearer understanding, the diagram provided can serve as a guide to help identify where each weight should be placed. However, if players remember the names of their weights, they may follow this path instead:

Left ScaleRight Scale
  • Lightest Weight
  • Light Weight
  • Heavy Weight
  • Starter Weight
  • Medium Weight
  • Heaviest Weight

If adjusted properly, the dial should center itself on the scale, pointing towards the sword emblem. This position gives players the Execution Lever, which they must insert into the vacant slot at the gallows, thus solving the weights and scales challenge and moving them onto the next task: the Gallows Challenge.
