Silent Hill 2s Remake Cant Suffer the Same Limbo as Dead Space

Silent Hill 2s Remake Cant Suffer the Same Limbo as Dead Space

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the upcoming remakes of classic horror games like Silent Hill 2 and Dead Space. On one hand, it’s fantastic that these beloved titles are being revitalized for modern platforms, making them accessible to new generations of gamers. On the other hand, I can’t help but wonder if the success or failure of these remakes could potentially set a precedent for the future of these franchises.

The premise of a Silent Hill 2 remake has obviously been highly controversial as the original is one of the most revered horror games of all time. It doesn’t help, then, that consumers are fairly desensitized to the idea of remakes in general now that they’re so prolific. Nevertheless, it’s great that Silent Hill 2 is being remade for the sake of accessibility on modern platforms without the use of emulators or modded editions, and even if it was to underperform by whatever measure it would be hugely disappointing if no other Silent Hill remake is endeavored afterward.

The reboot of EA Motive’s “Dead Space” could symbolically warn us about potential issues with the Silent Hill franchise, if Bloober’s remake doesn’t live up to expectations. After initially receiving criticism, the remake of Silent Hill 2 swiftly turned into praise and it’ll be intriguing to see if this positive momentum continues as its release is just around the corner next month. Yet, fans eager for remakes of other Silent Hill games may want to remain cautiously optimistic.

It hasn’t been officially decided yet whether Motive Studios will remake Dead Space 2 or Dead Space 3, but given their current focus on developing an Iron Man game and Battlefield, it seems highly improbable (for now).

Dead Space’s Remake Future Being Uncertain is a Cause for Concern

For Dead Space, it wouldn’t be entirely disastrous if remakes of the second and third games aren’t approved in the future. This is because there’s been enough time since its release and the series is relatively small, making it already quite contained and well-organized. In contrast, Silent Hill has several games that could significantly benefit from remakes, and the franchise continues with upcoming main installments like ‘f’ and ‘Townfall’, implying that the series is far from over and eager to be revived again.

The progress on these titles continues regardless of how well Bloober’s remake of Silent Hill 2 performs, but if this remake fails to meet the expectations set by both Bloober and Konami, it would be unfortunate not to see other Silent Hill games receive the same chance that Silent Hill 2 has been given, especially since they arguably require it more.

Silent Hill 2 Shouldn’t Be the End-All Be-All for Remakes

Additionally, what’s particularly noteworthy is that the revamped version of Motive’s Dead Space stands out due to its impressive reinvention, offering significant enhancements over the original. This is achieved through breathtaking audiovisual upgrades, a completely redesigned USG Ishimura for enhanced exploration and optional activities, fresh content like a full side quest centered around Nicole Brennan’s adventures, and a complete voiceover with Gunner Wright reprising his role as Isaac Clarke.

If a high-quality remake of Dead Space doesn’t sell well enough, it’s uncertain what level of success would be required for another remake. It’s hard to say if lackluster sales or reviews could entirely doom future Silent Hill remakes, given Konami’s confidence in their ability to make a profit even from a struggling series.

Although it seems like the development of Dead Space might be paused again, leaving fans like Isaac Clarke tethered to crossover content, there’s always an uneasy feeling about the potential ripple effects on other projects, such as hypothetical remakes. It would be wonderful if Silent Hill could follow in Resident Evil’s footsteps by creating a remake continuity alongside its mainline series, and let’s hope that the remake of Silent Hill 2 doesn’t hinder this ambition, regardless of its performance. Konami should consider the broader picture and what can be achieved within that framework to make this a reality.
