Silent Hill f and Townfall Should Be the Ying to Each Other’s Yang

As a long-time fan of the Silent Hill series, I can confidently say that the recent surge in popularity is nothing short of a dream come true. The reception for the Silent Hill 2 remake has been phenomenal and it’s a win for the franchise as a whole, even if some of its subsequent games have fallen short.

The horror game series, Silent Hill, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity that even its most dedicated fans would have scarcely dared to imagine just a short while ago. This surge can be attributed mainly to the exceptional response garnered by Bloober’s remake of Silent Hill 2, a success that was far from expected until very recently before its release. While the remake of Silent Hill 2 might not set new standards for modern AAA survival-horror games, it still represents a significant achievement for the Silent Hill franchise, regardless of the low expectations set by previous titles like Homecoming, Downpour, and The Short Message. Now, f and Townfall, as the only announced upcoming Silent Hill games at present, bear a heavy responsibility to uphold this newfound momentum.

As a cinema enthusiast captivated by the enchanting world of Silent Hill, I find myself eagerly anticipating the upcoming releases, Silent Hill f and Silent Hill: Townfall. The teaser trailers for these games offer tantalizing glimpses into their unique visions. While Silent Hill f showcases a distinctly Japanese-inspired setting, veering away from the rural American norm that has characterized the franchise thus far, Townfall‘s teaser leaves much to the imagination, with merely a CRTV Pocket Television among other items on a desk hinting at what’s to come.

Silent Hill Games Should Take the Whole Line Back to Formula

The recent surge in popularity for Silent Hill has created a precarious situation, and the design choices for upcoming games like f and Townfall will influence how long this success continues. At present, it’s unclear what type of gameplay they will offer, but an optimal situation could involve each title following two distinct paths. One path might emulate the linear, claustrophobic, and concise style of traditional Silent Hill games, while another could promote exploration and length, similar to the remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober. The remake aimed to preserve the original’s captivating survival horror ambiance in a third-person perspective, maintaining its nostalgic charm.

It’s doubtful that the game Silent Hill will return to using fixed camera angles and tank controls, given that large-scale franchises like Resident Evil have deemed this style obsolete in modern times. However, focusing on maintaining a compact and concise narrative similar to the original Team Silent games of Silent Hill might offer a more authentic and familiar experience. If either f or Townfall were to adopt such an approach, they would benefit from nostalgia.

Future Silent Hill Games Can Have Their Cake and Eat It Too

The remake of Silent Hill 2 is exceptionally lengthy and stands as the longest game within the Silent Hill series to date. While this doesn’t imply that the remake is tiresome or filled with excessive material, it does mean that a significant portion of its runtime consists of content that must be finished in subsequent playthroughs unless players recall the solutions to related puzzles, allowing them to bypass entire parts of the game.

In the revamped introduction, James Sunderland discovers Silent Hill in a manner distinct from the original game’s player experience. The enigma that players unravel during their voyage through misty roads and stores is essential, irrespective of whether the players were aware they needed to search specific locations for crucial items or not.

If ‘Exploration’ is a key feature of either game, ‘F’ or ‘Townfall’, another intriguing title could fulfill this need while also incorporating numerous captivating environmental puzzles. As for the future, it remains unclear whether these games will delve into other design elements inspired by ‘Silent Hill’, and we can only wait to see if they set a new standard that both can aim to exceed.
