In a different world, if the game named Silent Hill f didn’t bear the name “Silent Hill”, it might have been possible for it not to be recognized as part of that franchise. The key feature that sets Silent Hill f apart is its distinct and unparalleled setting, a secluded Japanese town named Ebisugaoka in the 1960s, which appears to be situated far from the usual Silent Hill locale, the tourist town of Maine in America. Unlike most games in the franchise, Silent Hill f seems to focus more on its main character, much like Silent Hill 2, and it can be justified for it to take such unique steps.
Silent Hill f’s Novelty is a Blessing and a Curse
The entire collection of games under the Silent Hill label has seen both successes and failures, with its most significant triumphs occurring early in the series and its biggest disappointments coming afterward. It’s hard to comprehend the lasting appeal of this IP, considering many other horror franchises that have emerged since then haven’t come close to achieving similar heights. Even before Bloober’s remake of Silent Hill 2, there was uncertainty about whether Silent Hill would remain dormant indefinitely or if Konami, or any other developer, would consider revisiting the series at all.
Therefore, it could be more advantageous for ‘f’ to belong to ‘Silent Hill’, as this might open up a new direction for ‘f’. The uniqueness of ‘Silent Hill f’ could enable it to possibly sidestep intricate lore connections if it chooses to, and even pioneer an innovative series that significantly alters the established ‘Silent Hill’ narrative.
Certainly, if game ‘f’ is distancing itself from everything associated with the iconic ‘Silent Hill’, it raises the question: what exactly defines it as a ‘Silent Hill’ title or why it should be entrusted with preserving the legacy of one of the most impactful psychological/survival horror franchises ever created. To put it simply, game ‘f’ could either be an empty canvas waiting to be filled or a questionable attempt at rewriting the lore or steering the series in a new direction. However, its lack of clear connections to the series’ history might actually work in its favor.
f Being ‘Silent Hill’ in Nothing But Name Can Be a Boon
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admit that the Silent Hill franchise has been a subject of controversy and polarizing opinions. However, ever since Bloober Team silenced any doubts about their ability to handle the remake of Silent Hill 2, the future of this terrifying series has felt much more promising.
Initial reactions to Bloober’s remake of Silent Hill 2 were filled with apprehension and doubt due to several factors, chief among them being that Silent Hill 2 is currently the most beloved Silent Hill game. The remake of Silent Hill 2 isn’t just an outstanding survival horror game, but it also stands as one of the best games in the Silent Hill series, even considering the relatively high standard it sets. The announcement of Bloober remaking the original Silent Hill has subsequently sparked a great deal of enthusiasm and trust.
Similarly, Silent Hill f is captivating due to its unusual nature compared to the rest of the series. Although it’s gameplay appears quite similar to that of the remake of Silent Hill 2, this could be acceptable if combat, puzzles, and exploration are balanced effectively. However, what truly sets Silent Hill f apart is its promise to introduce fresh lore and visuals, making it the most unique Silent Hill game yet. Hopefully, Silent Hill: Townfall, coming after it, will serve as a sign of the series adapting well to modern horror trends, quickly and successfully addressing its past shortcomings.
