Having overcome the terrifying experiences in Ebisugaoka town and the Dark Shrine (Otherworld), Hinako will at last return to Shimizu Residence in Silent Hill f. But the home she remembers is gone, now corrupted by the spreading spider lilies. As players investigate further, they’ll find themselves in a living room adorned with several photo frames. This discovery begins the Ominous Photo puzzle in Silent Hill f, challenging players to locate a missing photograph and solve the underlying mystery.
How to Solve the Ominous Photo Puzzle in Silent Hill f (All Solutions)
The Ominous Photo puzzle appears in the Shimizu Residence during the later parts of Silent Hill f’s storyline. To reach it, players must navigate the rooms on the west side of the residence, including the room belonging to Hinako’s parents.
The puzzle isn’t solvable right away because a picture is missing from the north wall. You’ll have to explore the various versions of the Shimizu Residence to locate the missing photo, place it back on the wall, and then you can finally solve the Ominous Photo puzzle.
After you get the frame, you need to look closely at the family portrait on the main wall, which shows Hinako with her loved ones. The people whose faces are scribbled out represent those Hinako dislikes (or cares about the least). This is the most important clue to solve the puzzle, because the faces that are scratched out in the main picture will change depending on which ending you achieve.
Here are all possible solutions for the Ominous Photo puzzle according to each of the endings.
This puzzle isn’t affected by the difficulty level you choose. Instead, it changes based on which ending you achieve during your playthroughs.
| Playthrough | Ending | Hints in the Main Photo | Photo Orientation |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Game | Coming Home to Roost (Default Ending) | Hinako’s face is scrawled over. | Rotate Hinako’s Photo Upside Down. All Other Photos Should be Upright. |
| New Game+ | Fox’s Wedding (Bad Ending) | Shu, Rinko, and Sakuko’s faces are scrawled over. | Rotate Shu and Sakuko’s Photo Upside Down. Rotate Rinko’s Photo Upside Down. All Other Photos Should be Upright. |
| The Fox Wets Its Tail (Good Ending) | Hinako’s parents and Rinko’s faces are scrawled over. | Rotate Hinako’s Parents’ Photo Upside Down. Rotate Rinko’s Photo Upside Down. All Other Photos Should be Upright. | |
| New Game++ | Ebisugaoka in Silence (True Ending) | Everyone’s faces except Hinako are scrawled over. | Rotate All Photos Upside Down Except Hinako’s |
Okay, so once I got the photos turned the right way, the main picture actually came loose, and that’s when I saw the White Bird and Fox Plate (Crest)! That finished the Ominous Puzzle in Silent Hill f, which means I can finally use the crest to solve the puzzle in My Room. It was a bit tricky, but I’m glad I figured it out!
Missing Picture Location in Shimizu Residence (Ominous Photo Puzzle)
When I first entered the room with that creepy Ominous Photo puzzle in Silent Hill f, I immediately noticed an empty space on the wall where a picture frame should have been. It turns out that missing frame is actually a portrait of Hinako, and it’s super important for figuring out the puzzle! It’s a key component, honestly – I couldn’t solve it without finding her picture.
To locate the missing picture frame, players should go to the Shimizu Residence II, which is another version of the house. Specifically, you’ll need to go to the eastern side of the house, to the spot indicated on the map.
Okay, so I need to follow this corridor until I see a red glowing door. As I get closer, I should see a calendar on the right side marked with the date six. I’ll grab that calendar and head back to the central hallway where the shrine is. Hopefully, this calendar is what I need to progress!
Put the calendar up on the wall to your right as you’re in the hallway, and then open the double doors on your left. Going through the doorway will take you to the Shimizu Residence II area, which is like another version of Hinako’s home.
Go to the east side of the house, just like where you discovered the calendar (the spot is shown on the map above).
When Hinako enters the room, she’ll discover the large picture frame of herself that’s needed to solve the Ominous Photo puzzle in Silent Hill f. After getting the picture, you must go through Shimizu Residence III before heading back to where you started.
Okay, now leave the room and go to the western side of the house (the location is shown on the map above). Watch out for enemies wandering the hallways as you make your way through this section.
When you enter the room, you’ll see a flashback with Hinako and her parents. After it finishes, take the calendar that has the 26th circled. Then, go back to the main hallway and, like before, put the calendar with the 26th on the wall.
Going through this doorway on the left will lead players to Shimizu Residence III. Luckily, you don’t need to unlock it first in the main hall of this area. Just walk through the doorway with the yellowish glow in the main hall to go back to the original version of the Shimizu Residence. Then, place the Picture Frame back onto the wall in the Ominous Photo puzzle room in Silent Hill f.
