I’ve spent a lot of time with Silent Hill f – I even created a fourth PlayStation 5 account just to earn the Platinum trophy for the fourth time! I’ve replayed it so much, partly to help with my Japanese studies. Honestly, it’s arguably as good as the original Silent Hill, and that’s saying something.
Through extensive gameplay, I’ve become familiar with every weapon and understand the unique strengths and weaknesses of each one, allowing me to succeed in battles at any difficulty level. However, it’s important to note that not all weapons are equally effective.
Your available weapons change depending on where you are: either in the town of Ebisugaoka or within the Dark Shrine (which represents Hinako’s nightmarish Otherworld). When you’re in the Dark Shrine, you’ll also receive a Lantern, but since it isn’t a weapon, it won’t be included in the following list.
The game has a lot of weapons, each with its own advantages. Because of limited inventory space and a limited number of Toolkits for repairs, it’s crucial to choose wisely which weapons you want to keep.
12. Kaiken
Dull, Weak, But Fast
Okay, so when I first stepped into the Dark Shrine, I was told to just follow the Fox Mask. It led me right to my first real weapon in the Otherworld – this awesome blade called the Kaiken. It felt so good to finally have something to fight with!
The Kaiken was a small dagger traditionally used in Japanese ceremonies and, historically, served as a self-defense tool for women, particularly those married to samurai. In this game, however, the Kaiken’s blade is deliberately made blunt, resulting in very little damage.
Okay, so the Kaiken isn’t amazing, but it’s got a couple of perks. It’s super lightweight, which means I can swing it really fast – that’s a big help when you need quick attacks. Plus, because it’s from another world, it doesn’t break, which is nice. Honestly, those are the main reasons I even use it… and the fact that I have to use it for that Shrine Vault Puzzle, or I’m totally stuck!
However, that’s generally where this weapon stops being helpful, as most players – myself included – swap it out for something better as soon as they can.
11. Crowbar
A Reskinned Pipe
You don’t find the Crowbar until you’re more than halfway through the game, and it’s usually meant as a last resort. By that point, you’re typically running low on weapons or your current ones are damaged.
The Crowbar is a bit shorter than the Steel Pipe, which is noticeable when you see how the characters swing it. This shorter length actually affects gameplay – you have to get closer to enemies with the Crowbar than you would with the longer Steel Pipe. It just doesn’t give you quite as much reach.
We’ve seen the Steel Pipe before, so its reappearance now feels like a deliberate challenge designed to catch players off guard. It makes the game harder by increasing the chance of getting hit and making attacks less accurate.
This weapon can be useful in an emergency, but it’s not good enough to replace any of your existing gear.
10. Baseball Bat
A Unique Break
The Baseball Bat initially appears very similar to the Steel Pipe, sharing the same movements. But it becomes clear the two are different once the bat starts to wear down – specifically, after losing about half of its durability.
If the Baseball Bat gets damaged, it splits into two pieces, but you can fix it with a Toolkit – basically, some quick repairs and ingenuity. This leaves you with the handle and a jagged, broken end. You can then use this broken end to stab enemies in close combat.
This weapon has a rare quality – unlike others, it’s quite difficult to find. While the Baseball Bat isn’t common in any playthrough, it’s especially hidden in your first game, appearing only after you’ve made significant progress. Even when you start a new game after finishing once, it remains scarce.
If you’re hoping to build a relationship with Shu by using this weapon throughout the game, you’ll likely need a lot of Toolkits, as it’s not a consistent path.
9. Kitchen Knife
Fitting Feminine Themes
You can find the Kitchen Knife early in the game, the first time you explore The House (not the Shimizu Residence, though one is also available there). It’s located in the kitchen, as you might expect.
This weapon is easy to use and effective, letting Hinako attack rapidly. However, it doesn’t last long – it breaks after only defeating a few enemies. It’s the same type of knife used by the Kashimashi and Ayakakashi characters throughout the game.
Interestingly, the choice of a kitchen knife as a weapon carries a certain symbolic weight. Knives are frequently used in both murders committed by women – they’re the second most common weapon used in the U.S., after guns – and in self-defense situations.
Given the game’s strong focus on the frightening realities of marriage, abuse, and women’s anxieties, it makes sense that a kitchen knife is available as a weapon.
8. Naginata
Hit NOW, Please!
The naginata is traditionally considered a weapon for women in Japan. In the game Silent Hill f, this idea is taken further: the naginata is depicted as a wedding gift given by men of the Tsuneki Clan (the clan associated with the Fox Mask) to their wives. This specific naginata is uniquely designed with baby birds, symbolizing the character Hinako.
You’ll find the Naginata the second time you visit the Dark Shrine, just before facing the Sakuko boss. It’s hidden behind a secret door that opens when you interact with a fox statue, and a cutscene will play when you get it.
The Naginata has long been a top weapon in the Dark Shrine, but it’s not perfect. Its length and weight make Hinako’s swings a bit slower. On easier difficulties like Story or Casual, this isn’t a huge problem – you might bump into walls a little more often. But on Hard and Lost in the Fog, it becomes very noticeable and you’ll find yourself wishing Hinako could swing faster.
During the Sakuko boss fight, to dodge her Suzu Bell attacks, you need to quickly locate her and attack right away. Otherwise, you won’t be fast enough to stop the attack.
7. Sledgehammer
Let’s Play Whack a Kashimashi
Once you reach Ebisugaoka Middle School and start the Stairwell Puzzle, you’ll need to head outside to the courtyard to find a key. While you’re out there, go to the edge of the courtyard, similar to where you’d search for an Ema Plate. A little to the left, you’ll see a Sledgehammer leaning against the fence, ready to be picked up.
Since this is your first Heavy Weapon, the game will guide you through how to use it. After that, all you need to do is hold the button and swing. However, the Sledgehammer is significantly heavier than other Heavy Weapons, which makes it harder to swing and slows down Hinako’s attacks.
The Sledgehammer truly packs a punch. It can either knock an enemy unconscious or eliminate them completely, giving you a chance to either finish them off or quickly get away. Despite its heavy weight, it’s also remarkably tough.
Okay, so the Heavy Weapons are generally super powerful – some of the best in the game, honestly. But if we’re talking specifically about the Sledgehammer? It’s good, but it doesn’t quite reach the top spot compared to other Heavy weapons, in my opinion.
6. Axe
Heavy and Heavy Hitting
Among the heavy weapons in the game, the Axe is the strongest. Players first find it on the Mountain Trail, while traveling to Shu’s House. It functions identically to the Sledgehammer, but is slightly lighter.
This detail is very slight, making it easy to overlook, especially later in the game when the Axe is readily available. These few milliseconds are critical, providing just enough time to strike before an enemy finishes their attack. It’s almost a full second faster than usual, and that extra time can be a lifesaver, particularly on more challenging levels.
If you’re deciding whether to bring the Sledgehammer or the Axe, choose the Axe. It deals the same amount of damage, but swings faster.
5. PP-8001
An Alien Ending Reward
The Silent Hill series is known for including humorous elements like silly weapons, unexpected endings, and outlandish costumes. The latest installment, Silent Hill f, continues this tradition with the PP-8001 – a plastic, glowing toy saber that brings back nostalgic memories of childhood lightsabers.
To unlock PP-8001, you first need to have achieved the UFO Ending in the game. Then, on that same save file, play through the game as normal until you return to Ebisugaoka after your initial visit to the Dark Shrine. When trying to reach Rinko’s house, go back to the location where you found the first Alien Poster and interact with it. This will trigger a cutscene showing a flying saucer delivering PP-8001 behind you, and when you turn around, you’ll find it glowing where it should be.
This weapon is incredibly durable – almost impossible to break. Like the Sacred Sword, it repairs itself when you’re using other weapons, so you won’t need a Toolkit. Interestingly, as it takes damage, the plastic parts pull back inwards, visually mimicking the way old toys used to break apart.
This weapon is clearly intended as a fun reward, considering you need to finish the game multiple times to get it – first to unlock the UFO ending, and then to actually earn the weapon after that. But don’t let that fool you – it’s incredibly powerful, especially when Hinako uses it.
4. Steel Pipe
Old Reliable
The Steel Pipe is arguably the most recognizable weapon in the Silent Hill series, famously used by Hinako in Silent Hill f. It’s the first weapon players receive, and it’s incredibly dependable – a true staple for any Silent Hill protagonist, and a comforting companion throughout the game.
The Steel Pipe is a reliable and durable weapon that’s surprisingly fast to use. It deals good damage without being too heavy, and you can find it everywhere throughout the game. In fact, it’s so iconic that Hinako is always shown wielding a Steel Pipe in all cutscenes, regardless of what weapon the player has equipped.
The Steel Pipe is a surprisingly effective weapon, even though it’s basic. It also fits perfectly with the overall style and history of the game, which is great to see – it’s good that such a classic item is also so powerful.
3. Sickle
Fast and Efficient
Among the common weapons found in Ebisugaoka, the Sickle is the most powerful. Although small, it deals significant damage and is very light, allowing for incredibly fast attacks. You can often defeat enemies before they even have a chance to attack with this weapon.
You’ll first encounter the Sickle while traveling to Rinko’s house, directly opposite a Hokora. But if you happen to miss it there, don’t worry! You’ll have another chance to find it soon after, as it appears on the very first scarecrow during the Field Puzzle.
The Sickle’s biggest drawback is that it loses durability quickly with frequent use. It also seems developers intentionally made it rare, likely because it’s very effective against enemies. Despite this, I always make an effort to find Sickles and keep them in my inventory because they’re so powerful.
I always keep three essential items stocked: a Sickle, a Steel Pipe, and an Axe. I call them my ‘Big Three,’ and they’ve been incredibly helpful – I’ve earned three Platinum trophies with them already, and I’m currently using them to go for my fourth!
