Silent Hill F’s Xbox Launch: A Game Changer for Horror Fans!

A few years ago, Konami announced that it was working on multiple new Silent Hill projects, including a mysterious game known only as Silent Hill f. Although there wasn’t much information to take away from its reveal trailer, this new mainline installment immediately attracted the attention of many fans due to it being the first-ever Silent Hill game to be set in Japan. Konami revealed that Silent Hill f would be developed by NeoBards Entertainment and written by Higurashi: When they Cry creator Ryukishi07, though it didn’t provide a proper release window for the game.

During the same event that Silent Hill f was revealed, Konami also confirmed that a remake of Silent Hill 2 was in the works at Bloober Team. This game, Konami noted, would only be available on PS5 and PC for a minimum of one year. At the time, the company did not reveal any target platforms for Silent Hill f, like it did with the Silent Hill 2 remake. In spite of this, many presumed that NeoBards’ upcoming game would also be a PlayStation console exclusive at launch. This assumption was, however, refuted by Konami earlier this week, as it confirmed during a recent livestream that Silent Hill f would be released not only on PlayStation 5 and PC but on Xbox Series X/S as well.

Silent Hill f Coming to Xbox on Day One is a Big Deal

The Silent Hill Series Has Largely Prioritized PlayStation over Xbox

Considering how seldom Konami releases Silent Hill games on Xbox consoles, the news that Silent Hill f is landing on Xbox Series X/S on day one is fairly significant. For many years, the Silent Hill franchise has largely prioritized PlayStation platforms over Xbox. The series’ first three numbered entries, as an example, were all released as PlayStation exclusives. Silent Hill 2 was the only one of these games that eventually came to the original Xbox. Silent Hill 1 and 3, meanwhile, oddly skipped the platform.

Initially released on PlayStation 2, it wasn’t until several years later that Silent Hill 3 made its way to Xbox 360. However, this version was exclusively included in the questionable Silent Hill HD Collection.

To this day, only three Silent Hill games have ever been released on an Xbox console on day one: Silent Hill 4: The Room, Silent Hill: Homecoming, and Silent Hill: Downpour. The first of these titles, which was the final game that Konami subsidiary Team Silent ever made, came out on the PS2 and the original Xbox in 2004. Silent Hill: Homecoming, meanwhile, was simultaneously launched on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2008 and was later ported to Microsoft Windows. The most recent mainline game in the Silent Hill series, 2012’s Silent Hill: Downpour, was also released on those two seventh-generation consoles. However, other Silent Hill titles from this era, such as Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, were not ported to Xbox for some reason.

Silent Hill f and Bloober Team’s Upcoming Konami Game Suggest that Future Silent Hill Games Will Be Multiplatform

When Silent Hill f is released on Xbox Series X/S, it will be the first brand-new Silent Hill game to be launched on a Microsoft console in at least 13 years. This is a pretty large gap, especially given that PlayStation has received four new Silent Hill games in the same timeframe, including the infamous P.T. demo. Fortunately for Xbox fans, though, Silent Hill‘s decades-long exclusive relationship with PlayStation may finally be coming to an end.

Recently, Silent Hill 2 remake developer Bloober Team announced that it was collaborating with Konami again on a new project based on an existing Konami franchise, which would be developed for Xbox Series X/S in addition to PS5 and PC. Although the company didn’t outright state as such, it seems incredibly likely that this is a new Silent Hill game, considering that Bloober Team has almost never worked on a non-horror project before. This news, coupled with the confirmation that Silent Hill f is a fully multiplatform title, suggests that future Silent Hill games will no longer skip Xbox. If this is indeed the case, hopefully, Konami won’t make Xbox players wait several years to play the Silent Hill 2 remake on their preferred platform.
