Silksong: The Best Changes From Hollow Knight

In 2017, the release of the game “Hollow Knight” quickly gained widespread attention. Since then, Team Cherry has continued to provide updates, additional content, and adaptations to ensure the game remained current. Originally intended as extra content, Hornet’s side story grew so large that it eventually evolved into a full-fledged game, marking the beginning of “Hollow Knight: Silksong” being unveiled in 2019.

As a devoted fan, I’ve eagerly anticipated the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong for quite some time now, a journey that felt like an epic odyssey. Thankfully, the wait wasn’t the longest in gaming history, and finally, in 2025, the game graced multiple major platforms. With a few years elapsing since our last encounter with the original Hollow Knight, some players might be wondering about the changes in this sequel. Apart from Hornet taking over The Knight’s role, here are some of the most significant transformations, both for the better and for the worse.

How Healing Works

Silk Vs Soul

In video games, health systems vary between different Metroidvania titles, with Hollow Knight and its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, showcasing distinct approaches. The protagonist in Hollow Knight, the knight, relies on a magical energy called Soul that regenerates as you fight enemies. Similarly, Hornet from Hollow Knight: Silksong has a resource named Silk. Both characters can also recharge their respective energies at certain statues and hot springs. However, it’s worth noting that in Hollow Knight: Silksong, the availability of these recharging points seems to be more limited compared to Hollow Knight. The special abilities and healing mechanisms for both characters consume charges from their respective Soul or Silk meter.

In the game ‘Hollow Knight’, players restore health one unit at a time, while filling up a Soul charge completely gives them three health points. Hornet’s healing item, Silk, also restores three health points each, but in ‘Silksong’, players can heal three health points simultaneously. The animation for Hornet’s healing is slightly quicker, and it can be activated mid-air without any assistance, giving it a slight advantage over ‘Hollow Knight’.

The Corpse Run

A Less Murderous Return

In Hollow Knight, similar to the Soulslike genre, death carries significant consequences. Upon dying, players forfeit their Geo, the game’s currency. When they revisit the spot of their demise, their character’s corpse becomes animated and aggressive. The Knight’s Soul meter will also be damaged until the corpse is destroyed, highlighting the impact of death in this game.

In Silksong, players who frequently die are rewarded more generously due to its challenging nature as one of the hardest Metroidvanias released in recent years. Whenever Hornet dies, she leaves behind static Silk, which players can collect to regain lost Rosaries, their currency. Shell Shards, another type of currency in the game, won’t be dropped and neither will Hornet’s Silk meter be damaged during this process. While resetting at benches can still be demanding at times, at least Hornet doesn’t have to fight herself after death.

Tools

Giving Hornet An Extra Edge Over The Knight

Progress in Hollow Knight empowers The Knight with abilities ranging from an explosive energy blast to a devastating earth-shaking strike. These skills consume Soul energy, and aside from his Nail, they represent the knight’s sole attack methods. In the upcoming game Hollow Knight: Silksong, combat will introduce a fresh gimmick through Tools.

In the game Silksong, players can obtain various Tools for Hornet in several ways: purchasing them from vendors, completing tasks, or discovering them within the game environment. For instance, an effective and beneficial Tool that players might come across early on is called the Sting Shard. Upon being thrown, this item will set off a blast of blades if enemies come into contact with it. Although they don’t cause as much damage as Hornet’s Needle, Tools serve as a useful enhancement to the gameplay experience in Silksong.

Hornet Can Talk!

More Than A Shift In Protagonists

In the game Hollow Knight, the Knight character didn’t have a named identity or the ability to speak. Like many video games, the protagonist was mute and NPCs would converse with him instead of conversing directly. However, what makes Hollow Knight: Silksong more captivating is that Hornet can actually talk, allowing for more engaging interactions between characters.

In the new game “Silksong”, she’ll engage in genuine dialogues with Non-Player Characters, making them both informative and amusing. Unlike its predecessor, “Silksong” doesn’t feature voiced dialogue, but it’s an improvement to have a vocal protagonist in the sequel. Perhaps Team Cherry might consider adding voiceovers for their next game, around a decade from now.

Bonding With Your Map Maker

Shakra Is There By Your Side

In contrast to many Metroidvanias where the map automatically updates as you explore, Hollow Knight offers a unique approach. Instead of discovering the layout naturally, players must seek out Cornifer, a mapmaker, in each biome they visit. Unlike him, his wife Iselda sells additional items such as icons. This system took some getting used to for Metroidvania fans, but it proved to be an intuitive and engaging way to navigate the game.

In the game Hollow Knight: Silksong, the map system has been enhanced, corresponding with Hornet now being able to communicate. A new character, Shakra, emerges in various biomes offering maps and accessories to Hornet without needing assistance from others. Shakra is also more involved in the story and her relationship with Hornet develops throughout the game. While Cornifer and Iselda were beloved characters in Hollow Knight, the shift in Silksong was a welcome change.

Quests Are Actually Quests

Your Wish Is My Command

In Hollow Knight, the tasks weren’t clearly indicated like they often are in games with similar features, using menus. However, in Hollow Knight: Silksong, the quests are made more noticeable through the Wish system. By conversing with NPCs or checking a bulletin board, Hornet can undertake various Wishes. These Wishes will appear in a separate menu to facilitate easy navigation.

In some of these quests, the specifics can be ambiguous, and they won’t lead players directly to certain locations, which represents a departure from Hollow Knight. Nevertheless, others might enjoy the enigmatic nature of Hollow Knight’s quest design just as some RPG enthusiasts prefer to play their games without any quest markers at all. However, new players will undoubtedly find the Wish system in Silksong advantageous.
