As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the creators of “The Sinking City” are venturing into uncharted territory with its sequel. Instead of a direct continuation, we have “The Sinking City 2” shaping up to be a chilling third-person survival horror game in a semi-open world environment. This spin-off stands independently from the original, allowing newcomers to explore the haunting ruins of Arkham, uncover clues, and untangle intricate mysteries without needing any background knowledge from the first game. For studio Frogwares, known primarily for its action-adventure titles, this genre shift marks just the start of an exciting journey.
As an eager fan, I’m thrilled to share that the forthcoming sequel promises a plethora of fresh creatures inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos, a revamped battle system, and much more, all crafted using the advanced Unreal Engine 5. Recently, Game Rant had a chat with Frogwares’ publishing director, Sergiy Oganesyan, to delve into the significant updates players can anticipate in The Sinking City 2.
Changing Directions To Help Ensure The Studio’s Future
For a gaming studio, it can be quite simple to gain recognition by specializing in one particular game type. Although this can be advantageous, some studios aim to maintain variety and growth by shifting focus to different genres. This move not only keeps the current player base engaged but also attracts new players. As Oganesyan put it, Frogwares sought a departure from their typical action-adventure games to explore something completely novel.
For over two decades, we’ve been a standalone studio known primarily for detective games. While this recognition has served us well, it’s also limited our scope. The gaming world is constantly changing, and it will continue to do so as long as people keep playing. To secure the future of our studio, we aim to broaden our creative horizons and reach new audiences. Our goal is to stay relevant for another 20+ years, and to achieve this, we need to take more daring leaps.
Enthusiasts of the initial installment in the series can expect to relish the exploratory elements of “The Sinking City” while experiencing a chilling survival horror spin-off. Contrary to its predecessor, “The Sinking City 2 ” doesn’t necessitate players to gather every clue in order to advance; this change brings more flexibility to gameplay and could potentially introduce intriguing new narrative elements.
A Major Combat Overhaul For The Sinking City 2
In-Development Images of “Wound-Body” System
In contrast to the initial game in the series, The Sinking City 2 presents a significantly altered approach to combat. Developed by Frogwares, the revamped combat system aims for authenticity and fulfillment. Noteworthy changes include strong recoil effects and lifelike enemy responses, which are truly appreciated when absent. The team expands upon these features with the “wound-body” system, enabling players to identify where they’ve hit an enemy, enhancing immersion through visual and auditory cues. In a discussion about this system, Oganesyan mentioned it as a key element improving player engagement.
We’re enhancing the gaming experience by incorporating a “wound-body” system that vividly illustrates the exact location and type of damage inflicted on an adversary by a weapon. Unlike traditional games where impact points are marked with blood decals or similar visuals, our enemies will have a layered structure of bones and muscle tissue that becomes visible when a bullet pierces their skin. This added layer spans the entire body, ensuring that you’ll consistently experience lifelike (and gruesome) impact effects, which is part of the immersive satisfaction we’re striving to create.
Through observing the extent of harm the player inflicts on their opponents, they can enhance their combat tactics by prioritizing targets more effectively and executing calculated, precise attacks. This feature seems to cater to gamers who appreciate intense, gory gameplay, and it’s part of the numerous updates expected in The Sinking City 2.
