At the close of The Wheel of Time Season 3, viewers witnessed a heartbreaking culmination for Moiraine and Siuan’s tale. Throughout the entire series, Siuan and Moiraine were among the most beloved characters, with fans hoping to see their bond deepen into something extraordinary. Regrettably, destiny had other plans as the emergence of the Dragon Reborn in the storyline strained their relationship. However, the creators of the TV show opted for a unique narrative twist by ending Siuan’s life much sooner than her demise in the novel series.
In a recent conversation, Game Rant spoke with showrunner Rafe Judkins regarding the poignant scene involving Siuan-Moiraine in the final episode of Season 3, discussing how these two characters were fated to share this emotional experience together.
Judkins on Siuan’s death and how Moiraine felt about her demise while battling Lanfear

In the conversation about Siuan’s demise and Moiraine’s close brush with death, Judkins emphasized that he wanted to depict the bond between Moiraine and Siuan as deeply sorrowful, characterized more by their shared obligation than personal affection. Despite longing for an escape and a peaceful existence together, they opted for the heartrending, heroic decision to put the common good above their own joy. Furthermore, their tale serves not just as a symbol of a doomed love but also illustrates the heavy toll of commitment to a cause that transcends personal well-being.
In our storytelling approach, we aimed to convey a deeply moving bond between Moiraine and Siuan, one that is torn apart by their obligations, yet greater than personal desires. They yearn for the simple life, to retreat to a secluded cottage together, but duty calls them to something more significant. Each of them, in their own way, would rather escape reality, but they choose to sacrifice their dreams for the greater good. This choice, we hoped, would evoke an emotional response reminiscent of souls who, upon losing their soulmate, often speak of feeling their passing – a sense that something profoundly spiritual is taking place.
In our imaginative rendition, this represents their shared bond – when Siuan passes away, Moiraine experiences a profound sense of liberation, as if she were losing her soulmate. Both women understand that they must fulfill their duties together, despite the bleakness of their fate. Yet, they demonstrate immense valor by being prepared to relinquish not only their lives but also their love and joy for a higher cause.
In the “The Wheel of Time” series by Robert Jordan, Siuan’s death scene differs significantly from what was portrayed in Season 3’s finale. In the books, Siuan sacrificed her life during the last battle, attempting to save Mat from the Grey Men assassins. However, in the show, she perished within the White Tower at the hands of another Aes Sedai, altering both the context and emotional resonance of her demise.
In Robert Jordan’s novels, Siuan’s death reinforces her role as a battlefield strategist and protector, tying her sacrifice directly to the Last Battle. Conversely, the TV show’s version reinterprets her ending by focusing on a more personal and politically charged moment within the White Tower. This change in portrayal shifts the emphasis from war heroism to the emotional toll of fractured alliances within the organization.
What happened to Siuan?

Starting from Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time”, Siuan found herself under scrutiny by her fellow Aes Sedai due to not disclosing the location of the Dragon Reborn. This situation shifted significantly upon the arrival of Elaida, a member of the Red Ajah, at the White Tower. Immediately upon entering, Elaida declared her intention to unseat Siuan as Amyrlin Seat and claim the position for herself. She initiated a vote among the Ajahs, aiming to gather support for her mission. Initially, she encountered resistance, and she was in need of allies. Unbeknownst to Siuan, Elaida was not a Black Ajah, despite Siuan’s suspicions.
As time went on, difficulties multiplied for Siuan. While in a dream-like state, Moiraine encountered Siuan and informed her that submitting to the Dragon Reborn would aid him during the Last Battle. Without hesitation, Siuan declares the White Tower’s support for the Dragon Reborn. However, there appears to be disagreement among the Aes Sedai, which Elaida exploits. She bars Siuan’s companions from the White Tower and calls a vote to depose Siuan and punish her as a suspected traitor. Concurrently, Moiraine was battling Lanfear and attempting to control her. When Siuan tells Elaida she will never reveal information about Moiraine and the Dragon Reborn, Elaida’s guard announces Siuan’s sentence to “execution,” leading to her death. Upon learning of Siuan’s fate, Moiraine experiences it emotionally and becomes enraged, almost killing Lanfear before she escapes.
In the Prime Video series, Siuan’s tale wrapped up differently than it did in the books. Yet, the scenes featuring Siuan and Moiraine were skillfully filmed and struck a chord with audiences.
The Wheel of Time Season 3 is streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
