Back in the day, skateboarding video games were everywhere, and exactly fifteen years ago marked the conclusion of that period with the release of Skate 3. As we reminisce about past console generations, it’s important to reflect on the significant influence titles like Skate had, and hope for their continued impact in the future.
Introduced as a more authentic simulation-style replacement for the numerous arcade-inspired Tony Hawk skating games, the Skate series made a lasting impact on the gaming world during the peak of Xbox 360 and PS3. Gamers who were part of the industry at that time are familiar with the frequent comparisons between Skate and Tony Hawk, and the intense rivalry between these unique franchises was noticeable. It was intriguing to observe how Skate evolved as a series across releases, becoming less tied to reality but still relying on a strong in-game physics system. Now that skateboarding games have moved primarily to indie development or are defined by their imitative or derivative nature, it’s essential to commemorate Skate 3, which signaled the end of EA Black Box’s groundbreaking sports franchise—at least temporarily.
Skate 3 Was a Swansong for AAA Skateboarding Games Back in 2010
For Many, Skate 3 Represents the Pinnacle of Its Genre
In comparison to the other games in the franchise, Skate 2 finds a harmonious blend of realistic simulation and outlandish improbability, whereas Skate 3 takes the series to new heights with its ambition. While impressive feats and impossible tricks are scarce in Skate 2, they are quite common in Skate 3. In fact, while all games in the series share similar physics systems, Skate 3 focuses more on performing daring, innovative stunts rather than realistic moves and routes as seen in its predecessors.
Looking back, Skate 3 turned out to be a fittingly intense conclusion for the series, even if it wasn’t apparent that it was an ending at the time. It offered an open-world skating environment that felt more like a playground than a realistic city, which is something modern games inspired by Skate, such as Session: Skate Sim, haven’t fully embraced, for better or worse. Key elements from the series, like Hall of Meat, made Skate 3 stand out as a significant title within the genre, and it continues to serve as a platform for skating enthusiasts to explore new techniques, tricks, and park designs due to its custom parks feature. In truth, Skate 3 will always hold a special place, but its legacy might change slightly with the upcoming release of Skate 4, also known as skate.
Regrettably, it seems that the remake of “Skate 3” hasn’t occurred yet, and it hasn’t been made available for PC platforms either. The most viable options to enjoy this game on contemporary systems are by making use of backwards compatibility on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, or via emulation.
Skate 4 Might Do Well To Borrow Heavily from Skate 3
As a devoted fan, I’m absolutely thrilled about the latest addition to the Skate franchise, titled simply skate. Skate 3 undoubtedly delights many, as it offers a balance between over-the-top stunts that don’t diminish the realistic gameplay the franchise is recognized for. Serving as a satisfying conclusion to the Skate series in 2010, one can only wish some of its essence has been preserved for future installments of the Skate series.
