Skullduggery Quest Guide in Metaphor: ReFantazio

As a seasoned adventurer in the mystical world of Metaphor: ReFantazio, I’ve seen my fair share of quests and bugs, but none quite as pesky as the Skullduggery side quest. This seemingly simple task of collecting eight Mortaskulls from Skeleton Soldiers in the Grand Cathedral Mausoleum can be a real headache due to an infamous bug that’s left many players scratching their heads.

In the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” there’s an optional mission known as a side quest called Skullduggery. This mission is given by a guard situated at the entrance of the Grand Cathedral Mausoleum in Grand Trad. Once players acquire the skill to teleport using the Gauntlet Runner, they can access this dungeon and related missions.

Although the task generally follows a simple path, gamers might run into an issue where a glitch prevents progress. This manual offers strategies for finishing the assignment and navigating around the bug at the same time.

As a gamer, I found myself on a side quest called Skullduggery that required me to gather eight Mortaskulls. These Mortaskulls can be acquired by taking down Skeleton Soldiers within the Grand Cathedral’s Mausoleum, more commonly known as the Catacombs. It’s not every day you encounter these Skeleton Soldiers in this dungeon, as they only occasionally pop out from the coffins that line its walls.

To get the Skeleton Soldiers to appear, approach the wooden coffins; when one begins to move, stand by as the enemy emerges. Continue this process until you’ve amassed sufficient Mortaskulls to finish the quest.

Skeleton Soldiers are vulnerable to Light and Physical attacks; characters such as Healers and Brawlers can easily defeat them. Upon their demise, they will automatically drop a Mortaskull. Gather eight of these Mortaskulls for Gallica to acknowledge you have the necessary items, allowing you to complete the quest. Afterward, return to the dungeon’s entrance and converse with the Anxious Guard to submit the quest and receive your rewards.

Skullduggery Quest Bug And Solution

There is a major bug related to the Skullduggery quest that can sometimes make it impossible to complete because the Skeleton Soldiers that players need to defeat to obtain the Mortaskulls stop spawning. Here is how it happens and how to prevent it.

How Does Skullduggery Get Bugged

In Grand Trad, following your return from Martira, Old Castle Town, two missions become available. One of these is titled “Haunted Heirloom,” assigned by a Disgruntled Noble on Sunlumeo Street. Your objective in this mission is to recover a prized artifact from the recently opened Grand Cathedral Mausoleum. The other quest, as previously mentioned, is called “Skullduggery.

Two tasks involve exploring the same dungeon, but they have distinct goals. While many adventurers collect both tasks before venturing in, some don’t. For those who finish the Haunted Heirloom task without embarking on Skullduggery simultaneously, there might be a glitch in their progress.

If players finish the Haunted Heirloom mission before engaging in Skullduggery, it may lead to Skullduggery encountering bugs. Consequently, skeletons essential for the Catacombs dungeon won’t appear, making it impossible for players to collect required items and complete the quest as Mortaskulls from this particular dungeon are the only available means to do so.

Skullduggery Bug Solution

The only way to fix the Skullduggery quest bug is by reloading the save to an earlier point in the game. If this is not possible for whatever reason, players can only choose to let the deadline for this quest run out (July 30) where it will naturally fail and disappear from the quest logs without issue. The rewards for completing this quest are nothing major, only a common armor piece and 3000 Reeve. However, completing it is a requirement for obtaining the ‘Help Anyone In Need’ Achievement (Complete All Quests), which means players aiming to get all trophies in Metaphor: ReFantazio will not be able to.

Luckily, many players have encountered this issue, suggesting that it’s quite probable it will be fixed in an upcoming update.
