Skyrim Bug Gives Unlucky Player The Worst Luck Stat Imaginable

Skyrim Bug Gives Unlucky Player The Worst Luck Stat Imaginable

Highlights

  • A Skyrim bug reduces a player’s Speech skill to an extremely negative value, hindering conversation checks and bartering.
  • While issues with the Speech skill can be fixed with console commands or earlier saves, many found this bug surprising and entertaining.

As an old-timer gamer who’s been adventuring through Tamriel since the days of Daggerfall, let me tell you this latest Skyrim bug has brought a chuckle to my weathered face. Mind you, I’ve seen my fair share of dragons, daedra, and even the occasional glitchy NPC, but reducing the Speech skill to negative values? That’s a new one!

An unusual bug in the game ‘Skyrim’ has caused a player’s Speech ability to drop below zero, preventing them from completing even simple dialogue scenes. Although Bethesda games are known for their odd glitches, the infrequency of harmful bugs in ‘Skyrim’ is what makes it endearing rather than aggravating. Despite its early days being riddled with issues, the current version of ‘Skyrim’ is generally smooth and reliable, thanks to numerous official updates and fan-created patches over the years.

To put it simply, despite what’s been discussed, there are still some tricks up the sleeve when it comes to Skyrim. One of these is a method that lets players permanently enhance their equipment with potent enchantments. This is done by temporarily boosting the Enchanting skill using Alchemy, and then boosting the Alchemy using Enchanting. Since the game’s stats are designed to handle small numbers, it’s surprisingly easy to cause an integer overflow – a situation where the affected stat becomes negative instead.

It’s still unknown what specifically led to this issue, but it appears that NoAdministration1070’s character in Skyrim has experienced an integer overflow, causing their Speech skill to mysteriously become -999975. The Speech attribute in Skyrim is primarily used for two purposes: to pass conversation checks and to negotiate better prices with merchants. Although a low Speech won’t prevent the Dragonborn from completing their quest, it can result in some entertaining scenarios.

Skyrim Player Has a Negative Value Speech Skill

In Skyrim, the character NoAdministration1070 lacks sufficient Speech skills to progress in the Dawnguard storyline due to the need to either convince or bribe Kibell for the Moth Priest’s location. Since persuading isn’t an option here, and the amount of gold needed for a bribe is directly tied to Speech skill, asking for 20 million gold from Kibell seems quite modest considering NoAdministration1070’s current Speech abilities.

Instead of resolving the problem by employing Skyrim’s console commands or going back to a previous save, there’s an intriguing allure in carrying on this seemingly jinxed playthrough. With The Elder Scrolls 6 in active development, it’s yet to be determined if dialogues will advance in the sequel and borrow elements from its Starfield counterpart. Unlike its precursors, Skyrim was criticized for shedding RPG aspects in favor of a more polished gameplay experience. However, this choice was well-received, as Skyrim’s enduring appeal demonstrates. Nevertheless, recent successes like Baldur’s Gate 3 might prompt Bethesda to reconsider their strategy for The Elder Scrolls 6.
