Skyrim Fans Are Not Happy With the Switch 2 Port

The popular game Skyrim is now available on the Switch 2, but players are noticing performance issues. It’s become a running joke in the gaming world how many different platforms Bethesda has released this 14-year-old RPG on, but many fans are disappointed with this latest version for the new console.

Bethesda unexpectedly released Skyrim on the Switch 2 on December 9, 2025, claiming it would offer faster loading, better graphics, and overall smoother gameplay than the original Switch version. The new version also includes all the content from the Anniversary Edition, giving players a lot to explore. Plus, owners of the original Switch version can upgrade for free. However, despite these promises, the game hasn’t performed as well as many players expected.

Skyrim Fans Report Poor Framerates and Input Lag on Switch 2

Soon after the release of Skyrim on the new Switch, players began reporting problems. One user on the Nintendo Switch subreddit described the experience as a “disaster,” explaining that even getting the free upgrade was a hassle. They had to completely remove their existing Skyrim files before downloading the massive 53GB update. Once they started playing, they found the input lag made the game unplayable and noted it only ran at 30 frames per second. While Final Fantasy 7 Remake also runs at 30 FPS on the new Switch, Skyrim is an older game – over a decade old – which makes the performance issues more concerning. Another Reddit user called the port “an absurdly poor effort,” stating that the lag and poor optimization made the original Switch version a better option.

Players on both the Switch and Skyrim online communities reported similar issues: slow performance, noticeable delays between actions, and trouble upgrading to the latest version. Many felt these problems were particularly frustrating given the game’s age. Although Todd Howard has expressed a desire for Bethesda to have continued supporting Skyrim for longer, the game has received numerous updates and fixes over the years, even on newer consoles. Considering how much experience the developers have launching Skyrim on various platforms, some fans are understandably disappointed to encounter such significant problems on the Switch 2.

The Switch 2 isn’t the first version of Skyrim to have problems at release. Some players remember the original Switch version also launched with issues, but those were fixed over time with updates. Hopefully, the Switch 2 version will receive similar patches, though it’s unknown when those might arrive. Despite being 14 years old and having some bugs, Skyrim remains incredibly popular. In fact, the game saw a surge in players as recently as April 2025, likely due to renewed interest following the remaster of Oblivion, another game in The Elder Scrolls series.

Microsoft has stated they plan to support the Switch 2, which is a good sign for fans of Bethesda games like Skyrim and Elder Scrolls. Since Microsoft owns Bethesda, we can expect them to address current problems soon. While future Elder Scrolls games might come to the Switch 2, it’s not certain, and Skyrim players are still facing difficulties.
